Cheryl Refuses . . To Change Name Hollywood (UPI) Ac tress Lana Turner's 14-year- old daughter, Cheryl, was praised in a juvenile court transcript on file today for showing courage in refusing to assume another name to avoid publicity in the slaying of Johnny Stompanato April 4. Parts of the transcript of an April 24 hearing before Superior Judge Allen T. Lynch were revealed Monday in the District Court of Ap peals where Cheryl's father, restaurateur Stephan Crane, has filed an appeal to a ruling making the girl a ward of the . court. Lynch was quoted as ex pressing concern that pub licity would "be heaped on Cheryl's head every time she walks out the door." He sug gested the tall, attractive girl might attend some school un der an assumed name. "What would you think about that, Cheryl," the jurist asked. Cheryl said, "No" and indi cated she would rather stay 0 in Southern California and "fight it out." "That's courage," Judge Lynch said. Strauss Holds Fire In Review of Five Years as AEC Head Washington (UPI) Lewis L. Strauss violated his favor ite rule, "Please leave quiet ly." He did it, however, with a minimum of noise and no name-calling. He read a 10-page statement summing up his five frequent ly stormy years, ended Mon day night, as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. 4 Once he referred in passing to "some critics." But he left them as anonymous as faces in a crowd. - - Strauss said his statement was an unclassified (non-secret) version of a classified (secret) report he made to President Eisenhower last week. Someone had suggested he pass it on to the public. That was why he was violating his "leave quietly" rule and hold ing "my last press confer ence." Holds Fire After reading his state ment, a record of five "years of growth," the 62-year-old Strauss quietly Invited ques tions. Few men have been as hot ly embroiled in political con troversy as Strauss. But he re jected all opportunities to give his political foes a final past ing. Someone mentioned Sen. Clinton P. Anderson (D-N.M.) Anderson, former chairman of the Congressional Atomic En ergy Committee, can't stand Strauss. Strauss can't star3 Anderson. But Strauss held fiis fire. He said "personalities have place" at an occasion like Monday's. What about Dixon - Yates, the private powe"r proposal which generated so much heat that President Eisenho-.ver fi nally cancelled it. Looking back, did Strauss consider Dixon-Yates a mistake? No Mistake Strauss said Dixon -Yates had not made him happy. But a mistake? "No." How about Dr. J. Robert Op penheimer, father of the war time A-bomb from whom,jthe AEC, under Strauss' chair manship, withdrew security cleaorance in .1954? What were his thoughts now about what was done to Oppenheimer? "They have not changed." The - House-Senate atomic "watchdog committee" has al ways breathed scorchingly on O- : Strauss' neck. Does he think the "watchdog committee" is a good device? For the first time Strauss' voice inched up a notch. "Yes, sir, it's a good de vice," he said. Political opposition? "It's annoying but health ful." ' Attorneys for Negro pupils had asked the court to by-pass the appeals court and hand down an immediate ruling on Federal Judge Harry J. Lemley's order to suspend in tegration at Central High school until January of 1901. (UPI) A West Coast Airlines plane, carrying 12 passengers and four crew members, made an uneventful emergency land ing here Monday night after a propellor became inopera tive. The Ontario fire depart ment was summoned to the airport as a precautionary measure butQthe two-engined plane made an easy landing The plane captain, Fred Orr, said no emergency was declared aboard the aircraft and there was no panic.
