HARDING McLeod Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Hume and daughters spent the week end of June 14 at Roseburg visiting Mrs. Hume's sister and brother-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kobernik. Mr. and Mrs. Nate Edwards of Van Nuys, Calif., are spend ing a few weeks in the cottage on Big Butte creek. Miss Jacqueline and Jose phine Hume spent a few days recently at the home of Miss Twyla Render in Sutherlin. Billy Brewster, who is serving in the Navy, is at home visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brewster. Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Barber of Trail returned to their home here after attending the graduating service of their son, Alan, from the University of Utah on June 9. Alan re ceived a bachelor of science degree with honors in civil engineering. He also received a commission as second lieu- ' tenant in the corps of Army Engineers Reserve, and will report to Ft. Belvoir in Sep tember for two years of ac tive dutQ Mrs. fiarge Brewster flew to Eugene to spend the week end of June 20 with her hus band who is employed there this summer. Pvt. William Littlefield of Shady Cove is now stationed at Camp iPwin in the MoQve desert with the 53rd Trans portation Company. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hard ing were dinner guests of the Rev. and Mrs. Albert Render and family in Sutherlin Sun day, June 22, at which time their daughter, Twyler, ac companied the Hardings back to stay the week with Jacky and Joey Hume. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hume and family spent Sunday, June 22, fishing at Brookings. Attending State Lions con ventions in Eugene June 19, 20 and 21, were Mr. and Mrs. Vic Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Ash of Union Creek, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harding, Mrs. John Gartman, Mrs. Joe Josephson, George Hubbard, and Heston Grieve. Steve Larson is T-Sgt. and Mrs. Marvin Pierce and fam ily of Kaneohe Oahu, Hawaii. Jrs. Pierce is the daughter of tne Larson. The Elk-Trail School dis trict voted 55 to 10 in favor of consolidating with the Eagle Point High school and Eagle Point voted 55 to 0 in favor of consolidation. First Lt. and Mrs. Richard L. Barber and daughter, Lyn da, are visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Barber. Lt. Barber has just finished missiles school at Ft. Sill, Okla., and will now re port for duty in Korea. His wife will live with her par ents at Gold Beach during her husband's absence. Mrs. Hazel Ulrich is visit ing friends in northern Cali fornia and will attend the Ice capades in San Francisco. Ga ley of Ashland. Mrs. Galey graduated of rom Ashland High school in May, 1834, one year later than did Susarme Homes. Both Mrs. Galey and Miss Homes be came sdhool teachers in the Ashland public schools. Both women attended and graduat ed from the old Ashland State Normal school, Miss Homes graduating in 1896. The picture of Miss Homes will be hung in the lounge in the north wing of Susanne Homes halL the SOC women's dormitory whose name, honors Miss Homes. Taught Several Yean Miss Homes taught in sev eral rural and town schools in Oregon and at Ashland High school for several years. The lure of adventure and travel called and" Miss Homes an swered by going to Alaska to teach. When she returned from the North she went on to further study at Oregon State college and the Univer sity of California. In 1920 Miss Homes was elected superintendent of schools for Jackson county, an office she was to hold for 12 years. She was the first wom an in Jackson county to be elected to any county 'office and discharged her duties in such a manner as to be instru mental in the improvement of educational procedures in southern Oregon. She pio neered many teaching meth ods and devices that are now regarded as standard in Ore gon schools. In 1926 Miss Homes was named president of the Ore gon State Teachers associa tion. While she was -county school superintendent she met and married Floyd Carter, a civil engineer, and they made their home in Jacksonville. She died in September, 1944. The " picture which Mrs. Dodge presented to Southern Oregon, college is a Bushnell portrait. In a high-necked shirtwaist blouse, Miss Homes is posed reading a book.
