Above is the Brooklyn Bridge, and in the background can be seen th Manhattan skyline. Flames from the burning tanker rose more than 135 feet in the air, at least 33 persons were injured and two seamen from the tanker ar miasini. Weeh En Accidents Faiatt loll Persons on regon By United Press International Oregon counted at least 11 persons dead in accidents over the week end, seven in traffic, three by drowning and one tractor fatality. A 75-yearold woman and her grandson were killed and two other persons injured ser iously in a one-car crash Sun day on the Baldock freeway south of Portland. Dead were Mrs. Dora Fisher, Spokane, the grandmother, and Bruce Melendy, 12. Mrs. Arthur M. Todd, 42, Eugene, Bruce's mother, and another son, 17- year-old Gary Melendy, were in "fair" condition in a Port land hospital. The car plunged off the Wilsonville bridge about one half mile south of Wilsonville junction. Other Sunday Crashes There were four other traf fic victims Sunday. They were Michael Niet- ling, 79, Sublimity, whose mo- torscooter collided with a car near Stayton and threw him into the path of a second car; John Scott Barker, 5, Vernon ia, a passenger in a car that collided with another auto on highway 47 three miles north of Vernonia; Larry Michael Leinonen, 17, whose car left the highway four miles east of Clatskanie, and David J. Steinnacher, West Linn, who died in a Portland hospital of injuries suffered when his motorcycle skidded into curb near the Ross Island bridge on the west approach A 28-year-old Canyon City logging fire operator, Keith McKenna, died in the crash of his pickup truck Saturday night on highway 395 about 14 miles south of John Day. Harold Keith, 44, Dallas, died in a Portland hospital Sunday night from injuries sustained Saturday morning when he was pinned under a tractor on his farm. Drownings Listed Drowning victims included Thomas Van Duesen, Aums ville, who apparently slipped struck his head on a rock and toppled into the Santiam iver late Sunday while fish ing with companions. Drag ging operations for the body, called off because of dark ness Sunday night, resumed at daybreak Monday. Fred A. Murray Jr., 18- year-old airman from Port land airbase, vanished in the Columbia river Saturday night after deciding to go for a swim at Rooster Rock state park with other airmen. Mur ray's body was located about one hour and 40 minutes la ter by sheriff's deputies. It was the first" drowning at Rooster Rock since the park was dedicated last July. Ronald Edwin Decker, 10, Portland, drowned in the Sandy river Saturday during a family outing when he at- iempted to retrieve a floating stick. Sheriff Red China Starts Nuclear Reactor Tokyo (UPI) Com munist China announced to day that its first experiment al nuclear reactor has gone into operation. The -New China News agency in a broadcast mon itored in Tokyo said "China's first reactor of the heavy wa ter type has gone into opera tion in the course of the cur rent big leap forward in so cialist construction." Tne agency said that a cyclotron has also been com pleted and ii ready for re search work. "Those two items of equip ment have been built, with considerable and valuable as sistance by the Soviet Union to promote China'i scientific and technological develop ment in the sphere of atomic energy," the agency added. "With their completion China moves into the age of atomic energy."
