IC mm Igyneil Eleeaer My husband doesn't want children. Herbert 9 I'll never be able to givejthem the right ad vantages. Eleanor 5. I wai married ten years ago, at the age of 20, to a man I love very much. Herbert is a grand person and I still love him, but I don't see how we can go on together. At the time we married Herbert said he never wanted to have children. He said he didn't think he could ever af ford to give children the kind of advantages they ought to have. I figured if we both worked for several years and accu mulated some savings, he would change his attitude. However, he hasn't. I want very much to have children but I can't see life away from Herbert. At the same time I feel I'll never be happy this way. 1 Herbert K. It was wrong of Eleanor to assume I would change by mind. What it amounts to is she lied when she said she wanted to marry me under any circumstances. I am not in the kind of work that will ever bring me a good income. If Eleanor quits work and we start a family, our sav ings will be gone in no time. In today's world you have to give children a lot of advan tages if you want them to grow up right. I'll never be able to do that. I love my wife and have now grown very dependent upon her. I don't think it is right for her to consider leav ing me now. What it amounts to is she tricked me into mar riage. The Council We agree it was wrong of Eleanor to mar ry Herbert under the given circumstances. A man who is not ready to accept the re sponsibility for a family is not ready for marriage.' Even now, after 10 years, Herbert is not ready for mar riage. His excuse about not being able to give children enough advantages is a poor one, indeed. If he were wil ling to take on the responsibil ity for bringing children into the world, he might consider ways and means of earning more to support them. ' Or if he might reflect that not all alvantages are of ma terial kind. Many children with few material advantages flourish under proper guid ance in a loving home. Herbert seems to be an im mature and selfish person. He is greatly impressed with his own ; dependence upon his wife, but very little concerned about her emotional needs. His argument that Eleanor tricked" him is a cruel weap on. Even if she had been com pletely honest about her atti tude at that time, her feel ings might have changed in 10 years. Herbert should consider the fact that he, in a sense, tricked Eleanor into marriage. He said he wanted to be her hus band when . in actuality he wanted to be her child, shar ing her affections with nobody else. Herbert has a lot of growing up to do and he won't be very happy until he does it. An un derstanding of religious teach ings might enrich his feelings and help him toward a broad er view of life. Psychiatric treatment might help him overcome the obstacles in de veloping a natural desire for a more fulfilled life. But most important, he needs to see the necessity for a change within himself. (Copyright 1958. General Features Corp.) Three Drown When Car Goes in Lake Enterprise, Ore. (UP) Three persons were drowned in Wallowa lake near Joseph Friday afternoon when their car plunged off the highway and into 10 feet of water. Skin diver Bob Wiggins later recovered the body of Mrs. Calista Shoemake, 65, Tarzana, Calif., Mrs. Jessie Biggers, 60, La Grande, Orei and three-year-old Christy Lee Branton, daughter of Mr and Mrs. William Branton of Enterprise. The child's mother, Mrs. Geraldine Branton, was the only survivor of the crash. She was found wandering along the highway later in a state of shock. State police said Mrs. Shoe make apparently was the driver of the car. Her body, along with that of Mrs. Big grs, was found inside the submerged vehicle and the child's body was found in the shallow water near the edge of the lake.
