I2A (tt'?g!Ultt fUM, I MM mtmffk Bloch of Stamps Always Worth M are S youthful tamp colitetor, acquired & blocfc of ig stamps in Owp and then proceeded to swap fivt of them for still other stamps. It seemed like profitable deal, and it was. But he would have made far more had fie kept the six-stamp block in tact. The reason is that he had acquired a margin block, with Mte plate number, of the blue, five-cent item in the Pilgrim Tercentenary series put out in 1920 to commemorate the landing at Plymouth Rock. As it happens, it is usually only the more advanced col lectors who know that stamps in blocks generally have a higher value than the total value of the identical stamps when separated. This is even more generally true when the block happens to be a "mar gin block." A margin block is a block of four or more Stamps that comes from the margin of the sheet in which the stamps were printed. If it happens to be from the corner of the sheet, and with full margins on each of the adjoining sides, it usually has a somewhat higher valuation. MANY TRY TO IMPROVE BEAUTY OF OLD FURNITURE Though many people recog nize the beauty in an unusual piece o furniture enough to buy it, it is strange how many of them then feel they have to do something to improve it. I am not referring to the repair of a broken piece, merely to the improvement of appearance by doing things to the surface. A case in point is that of a friend who picked up a dining-room table. It had four square, tapered legs and a round top, five feet in diam eter and made of two - inch thick ash boards. , The grain of the wood was beautiful, as one could tell by looking at the underside of the top. The top itself, how ever, had been heavily var nished and the varnish had been damaged when someone evidently placed a hot pot or some other receptacle on the surface. The varnish was blistered and the wood be neath a little charred. That, of course, was one reason why the piece had sold for $20 another one being that "round, heavy pieces of that nature are not exactly in fashion. -' It was necessary, obvious INDIAN BASSET AROUND Many a home has an Indian basket or two, and a substan tial number of them are some thing a member of the family acquired back in the 1800s. Usually the basket is re garded as a fairly useful piece quaint but not with any articular value. The truth is, however, some of these pieces have a value that is proportionately as great as that of some Navajo rugs, running to $1,000 or more. Aside from the condition of the piece and its history, the value depends on the scarcity of the design in its ornamen tation and the rarety of its purpose. One JmplO is that of a basket ? saw 'on a sideboard in a pnit home. It was a pot - shtjeS piece, about 14 inches feih nd 14 inches in diamete t the lip. The di ameter of the bottom was about nin inches. The design was common enough. It con sisted of1 1 teries of ascending steps, lifcf those on the side of a pyrftnid, running up the side from the bottom. An in verted eries was woven down from tht rim. Lst ummer Rex saved the Loomis' youngest child, year old Ellen, from possible death by holding her clothes in his teeth to prevent her from crawling onto a main high-wafc Y. Jmm It. 19S8 Than Singles If there is a guide line, or rrow, on the margin, the value is again increased, and if the plate number happens to be given in the margin, it is worth still more. The Plate number, of course, is the number of the plate from which the stamps were print ed, and they always appear on at least one of the margins of every sheet. But that isn't the only kind of a block to have an added value. If a guide line to aid the worker in perforating the sheet appears between the stamps, there is a pre mium, and if two of them cross in the center, then it is a "center line block" of which there can obviously be only one to a sheet. The value of the block men tioned above, according to Scott's catalogue, is $55, twice what it would be if the stamps had been cancelled. Incidentally, cancelled mar gin blocks are often found on parcel post mailings, and even though they may be of common .stamps, they are so rarely saved that the thought ful person will find it worth while to cut them out, leav ing a generous margin of the wrapping. ly, to remove the varnish and to plane down the top suffi ciently so that the charred area was removed. And it was also quite understand able to cut the legs down so as to turn the piece into a coffee table. But it was simply awful to stain the piece a dark mahog any color and then spar var nish it. The result was to turn it into a commonplace object with just as much per sonality and beauty as an or dinary assemblyline item. True, so far as color and shape went, it fitted in well enough with the room in which it was placed. But it would have fitted beautifully into almost any room if the wood had been left unstained. What should have been done is this. The planed-down wood should have been oiled at intervals of three or four days for two or three weeks or a month, rubbed down after each oiling, and then, after the final one, rubbed with beeswax. Crankcase oil would have done nicely. Had that been done, he would have had a piece of beauty that could not have been easily duplicated for much under $150. HOUSE MAY HAVE VALUE The weave was close, the material being some kind of withe or reed that I couldn't identify. ; The basket was filled with fruit. When it was passed to me, I noticed that it was held by two heavy loops extending out from opposite sides of the rim. When I commented on it, the owner calmly told me the basket was an Indian boiling pot which his grand-uncle had picked up at an Indian village back in the 1860s. The piece wouldn't leak for the simple reason that the liquid it contained caused the tight weave to swell even tighter. How it was used for boiling was by dropping red stones into the liquid until it had boiled sufficiently. After concluding that it might have an exceptional value, the owner sent pictures of it with a detailed descrip tion to over a dozen dealers and museums. The highest offer he got this was eight or ten years ago was $100, indicating a value of probably three times as much.
