(UPI) Home-town boy Rafer John son fell short of a world mark, but captured the Cali fornia Inyitational Decathlon with 7,780 points. The giant UCLA star had to share the spotMght, how ever, with Dave Edstrom, a 19-year-old University of Ore gon student built along the lines of two-time- Olympic king' Bob Mathias. Edstrom tallied 7,736 points in this, his second shot at the 10 event grind. Other Placers Steve Anderson, also of the University of Oregon, was third with 6,663 points. Other scores were Clarence Treat, Occidental c o 1 le g e, 5,901; Walter Mince, Bakersfield col lege, 5,841, and Walt Will iamson, also of Occidental, 5,664. Johnson, Edstrom and An derson will compete in the National A A U Decathlon championship at Palmyra, N.J., July 4-5. Top two men at Palmyra will go to Russia where they will meet world record holder Vassily Kuznet sov in a U.S .-Russia track meet in Moscow. Ready For Record? Johnson is the former world record holder and he took second in the 1956 Olym pics. There is little doubt that he will be ready to crack Kuznetsov's recent world mark of 8,013 points if and his sore knee ceases to bother him. In compiling his 7,780 score, Johnson took only one high jump at 5 feet 2V2 inches and one pole vault at 10 feet 11 78 inches for fear of reinsuring the knee. Scores of the Talent at Lone Pine and Ashland Bears at Eagle Point games were not reported. A three-run second inning was a big boost for the Tigers. In gaining the decision the Tigers got the benefit of eight bases on balls and two hit batters along with five hits. Rick Hassmann held the 'Cats to four safe swats. He walked two and fanned one. Bill Piche had two hits for the 'Cats and Dan Miles doubled. Ashland Cubs scored two runs in the fifth inning to beat CP. A hit by Dean Sam uelson, a walk, stolen base and an error got the markers. Lewiston moved seven and one-half games ahead of runner-ups Yakima and Wenat chee who moved into a tie for second place by virtue of Thursday action. Yakima lost a pair of games, 2-1 and 4-3, to Eugene and Salem tripped the Chiefs 4-3. Yakima, which had been six games out in second place, slipped a game and a half. Presidio at Camp White Next Week Camp White Strongest traveling baseball nine to ap pear in the Rogue river valley this season will be on the field at the Veterans Adminis tration domiciliary stadium on Wednesday night, July 2. The commission voted ap proval of the fight, which will be staged at Wrigley field here, and of business execu tive William Rosensohn as promoter, despite loud opposi tion from George Parnassus, and the co-managers of Car men Basilio. A half-million dollar gate is regarded as a possibility for the title bout. May Reconsider Matchmaker Parnassus sent a telegram to the commission which said he felt "extreme disappointment" because the date of the Patterson-Harris bout fell only 10 days before Bassilio's match with Art Ara gon. Joe Netro and John de John, Basilio's managers, said that unless there was a change in the date for the Patterson Harris fight ' "we may be forced, due to financial rea sons, to reconsider negotia tions for the scheduled bout with Art Aragon." Patterson and Harris are expected to arrive here in about a month to begin train ing for the bout.
