Shoplifting Van Lees of the 88 cent store, reported to police he apprehended a 12-year-old Medford youth shop lifting Wednesday. City po lice took the youth into cus tody and the case was refer red to juvenile authorities. Tonsillectomy Michael David Watkins, 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wat kins,. 689j South Modoc ave., Medford, was reported as a tonsillectomy patient at Rogue Valley hospital today. Brush Fire State forestry department headquarters here reported a one-fourth acre grass and brush fire on Van noy creek about three miles west of Grants Pass yesterday. It was thought to have been caused by a smoker. v Building Permits A $19,- 000 building permit to erect a residence at 2800 Argonne ave. was issued Wednesday to Jordan and Richey, contrac tors, by the city building de partment. A second permit, for $1,000, was obtained by Emmett M. Gott to remodel a residence at 2283 Buckshot Hill rd. Collision Two cars were involved in an accident about 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Sixth st. and Riverside ave., Medford po lice reported. Operators of the vehicles were Dorothy June Branum, 2511 Corona ave., Medford, and Dwayne Donald Prose, Williams, Ore. No ci tations were issued. Bicycle Theft Two bicy cles were reported stolen from the alley at the Crate rian theater during the past two days, according to city police. Larry Glen Betcher, 1004 Reddy . ave., Medford, reported his bicycle taken Wednesday evening. Thurs day morning, Don Wallace Underwood", 731 South Cen tral ave., Medford, reported the theft of a bicycle from the same location. Blight Reported in Hawthorne Bushes Blight has been reported in the valley hawthorne and pyracantha shrubs, according to Clifford B. Cordy, county horticulturist. . Although the blight also is found in pear and apple trees, the widest infection this year has been ound in hawthorne bushes, he said. A plant infected with blight will have dead branches or twigs with the leaves still clinging to them, it was re ported. . All dead parts of the shrub must be cut out well below where any discolora tion is visible. He said the infected branch should be nicked with a knife to a spot where no discolora tion is noted. Then with an other tool the branch should be cut off one to one and a half feet below the infected area. He explained that blight is a bacterial disease which infects the branch before it turns dark. He added that cutting out of the infected areas is the only cure for blight infections in these shrubs and trees. News About Servicemen REPORTS FOR DUTY Carl Dobrot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Dobrot, 2044 Sce nic ave.. Central Point, has reported to McClellan Air Force base for four weeks of ficer's twining under the Air Force Reserve Officers Train ing Corps program. Dobrot is a senior at Oregon State college, where he is ma joring in engineering. Haskins, 816 West Fourth st., Medford, Wednesday. Funeral arrange ments will be announced by Perl Funeral home. Funeral services for Rob ert Cavanaugh, 35, of 901 King st., Medford, who was killed in a plane accident Monday, will be . held June 27, at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Oakland, Calif. Internment will follow in the National Golden Gate cemetery in Oakland. Mr. Cavanaugh was born in Alameda, Calif., Oct. 21, 1922. He was a lieutenant commander in the Naval Air service and served in both World War II and' Korea. He was married in El Cer rito, Calif., July 26, 1952, to Dorothy Rocker, who sur vives. Other survivors in clude his children, Joe Simp son, Dennis, Denise and Ke vin Cavanaugh. Pallbearers will be his six cousins. LEWIS BLYTHE Lewis Blythe, 64, of Jack sonville died this morning in a local hospital. Funeral ar rangements will be announced by Conger-Morris, funeral di rectors. CHARLES E. DAILEY Funeral services for Charles E. Dailey, 89, who died Wed nesday, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Conger-Morris chapel. The Rev. Darold H. Jones of the First Church of God will officiate. Committal will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. Mr. Dailey was born in Ganges township, Michigan, Feb. 22, 1869. Suvivors include one daughter, Mrs. Everett Noss, Medford; two brothers, Bert Dailey, South Haven, Mich., and Frank Dailey, Holland, Mich.; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Butterfield, Flint, Mich., and two grandchildren. Holdup Attempt Brings 15 Years Eugene (UPI) Richard Eugene Founts, 18, was sen tenced to a maximum of 15 years in the state penitentiary Wednesday after pleading guilty to the attempted hold up of a grocery store here June 4. - During the holdup attempt, grocer Carl A. Ehrich, 62, suffered a head wound when Founts' gun was fired. Founts denied that he shot at the gro cer. ,. Founts and a girl companion were picked up west of Drain after a 13-year-old Eugene girl gave police a description of the car in which they drove away. The "body" turned out to be a store dummy, left there by pranksters. Carrier Demands Lead Market Higher New York (UPI) Rails led the stock market higher today. ' Demand for carrier stocks developed after Senate-House tax conferees agreed to repeal the 3 per cent tax- on freight transportation. Selected industries showed numerous gains running to a point or more. A few were up as much as three points. Chemicals were strong as a group, with DuPont and Eastman Kodak up a point or more each. Chrysler was up around a point in a firm auto section. Eastern Stainless Steel ran up around three points at its high. However, most of the steel leaders lost small fractions. , Oils favored the upside, with Richfield, Shell and Amerada up a point or more each. Sinclair hit a new high. Kennecott and National Lead ran up more than a point each in the non-ferrous metals. "Uncle Tuttle" Thompson opened the first post office here 95 years ago and was asked by the federal govern ment for a name for" the lo cality. Thompson became a father about that time and named the son Arad. That's the name he sent to the gov ernment which mistook the "d" for a."b" and called the settlement Arab. PLUS EXCITING CO-FEATURE 1 M ife tiife M Concerns Board Portland (UPI) i The State Board, of Health today expressed concern over a "sharply rising trend" in the number of reported gonorrhea cases among Oregon teen agers. - The Board, in an article in the June issue of the Oregon Health Bulletin, said the state's total gonorrhea case load among persons 15 to 19 years has jumped from 6.8 in 1949 to 19.8 last year. Dr. Harold M. Erickson, state health officer, said that "even taking into account the increasing proportion of teen agers in the total population, the rate has climbed from 48.6 cases per 100,000 persons in this age group-eight years ago to 73.8 last year." During the first three months of this year, 27 per cent of all reported gonor rhea cases in Oregon were among persons 15 to 19 years of age, Dr. Erickson said. A total of 208 cases were report ed, of which 55 were among the teen-age group and one was an 11-year-old child. BUS LECTURE Benington, Vt.
