Her doctor said pneumonia was compli cated by an upper respiratory infection. The songstress was hospital ized , Sunday after finishing a singing engagement at Co rona Del Mar, Calif. She was to have opened in Las Vegas, Nev., today. III x S- -jt"' ' " ; - - I Contract Awarded For Highway 99 Job Salem (UPI) The State Highway commission today awarded a $582,868 contract to Roy L. Houck and Sons, Salem, for 6.50 miles of grad ing on the Pacific highway about six miles south of Al bany. There were 21 higher bids on- the federal aid project. AGED VICTIM Badly beaten Mrs. Charlotte O'Neal, 86, is helped into an ambulance after being assaulted by an unknown assailant in her Minneapolis apartment The intruder ransacked a bureau drawer, but loss was unde termined. Before calling the neighbors, Mrs. O'Neal apparently took time to mop up most of her own blood in the kitchen. ... CONTEMPT FOR METERS Fritzlar, Germany (UPI) Motorists not only dislike the parking meters recently installed here, they have con tempt for them. Several times in past days they have dropped coins in the meters, set up tables and played cards until the time ran out. Talmadge Warns Against Voting Alaska Statehood Washington (UPI Sen. Herman E. Talmadge (D-Ga.) charged today that giving statehood to Alaska may lend weight to Communist propa ganda that the United States is an "imperialist" nation. Talmadge. reopening south ern fire against the bill, told the Senate: "We may be about to put ourselves into the dangerous and undesired position of at tempting to become, instead of the. United States of Amer ica, the United States of the World." His attack followed an ap peal by Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) for an end to the "inertia" -which he said has delayed a vote on the bill. Should Look at French Talmadge said those who cannot see the difficulties in volved in admitting a "non contiguous state" should "re flect upon the experience of the French in attempting to absorb the country of Algeria into metropolitan France." SKIPPER DIES Southampton, England (UPI) Capt. Donald Sorrell, one of Britain's best-known passenger lirter skippers and former master of the Queen Mary, died Wednesday at the age of 64. Sorrell had a heart attack earlier this year and death presumably was due to a second attack. PP&L To Extend , Electric Service Bradwood, Ore. (UPI) Pacific Power & Ligh't Com pany announced here today it will extend electric service to this Columbia river lum ber town and to neighboring Clifton. The announcement came at the same time that Columbia Hudson Lumber Company re ported it will rehabilitate its Bradwood operations. PP&L President and Gen eral Manager George Bragg said the decision of the lumber company to shift from its own steam-diesel generated power to PP&L service will make it possible, to extend service to both towns. (UPI) The Grant county grand jury returned a first degree mur der charge Wednesday against Robert Sproul, Mt. Vernon rancher, for the fatal shoot ing of his brother-in-law, Har lin H. Williams, last Satur day. The jury questioned six wit nesses and met for 80 min utes before returning the true bill. Sproul was arraigned be fore Circuit Judge Edward Howell. He was granted until July 7 to enter a plea. The shooting occurred after Sproul and his brother-in-law had argued over a right of way near their ranches. Polio Blamed For Salem Death Salem (UPI) Mrs. Lois T. McNeil, Turner, a 27-year-old mother of three, died in a hospital here Wednesday of complications resulting from an attack of bulbar polio more than five years ago. County Health Officer Dr. Willard Stone said the death was the first involving polio in about two years. Although Mrs. McNeil was at first confined to an iron lung and later to a rocking bed, doctors said she had re covered her respiratory powers.
