TEETH AT NIGHT- Many a mother writes, wor ried because her child grinds his teeth in ' his sleep. She wonders if this is a bad sympton, and if so, what to do about it. So far as I know, it is not an indication of serious dis- ease. Some times it means Or. Alvues that the .child was born to be rather nervous, and often he is more-than-us- ually nervous during the day. If I had a grandchild with this difficulty who was a behavior problem in the home and school I would get an electro encephalogram made to see if there was any abnormality in the tiny electric .currents that are constantly being formed in the brain. If there were, then I might try giving one of the new 'anti-convulsive drugs," which often help these children to be less irritable. On going to a big medical li brary I looked in a series of text-books on children's dis eases to see what the profes sors had to say on the subject of teeth-grinding. To my sur prise, I found only a few words on the subject in only one of the books and hence I imagine it cannot be very im portant. Thousands of persons who have tried to sleep in a noisy hotel or on a noisy train, or who work at night and have to try to sleep during the day, have craved some apparatus that would cut down greatly on the amount of noise ham mering into their ears. I my self have tried several of the commercially-made - ear pro tectors but they didn't help me enough. Many people stuff cotton into their ears, but this helps but little. It helps more to use cotton saturated in pe troleum jelly, but even that doesn't work well enough. A while ago I read a fine book by Dr. Joseph Sataloff on "Industrial Deafness, Hear ing Testing, and Noise Meas urement" (McGraw-Hill). In his chapter on ear protectors he admits that none of the ear plugs so far devised help enough. Doubtless they would work better if they were custom-built to fit snugly into the ear canals of the individ ual user. Because of this, men Waifs TV Radio Service Oldest Shop In 80. Even then they are likely to suffer from the noise." The trouble is that the whole skull gets to vibrating, and this vi bration reaches the inner ear by way of the bone. It is important that " men who work in a very noisy place be given as much ear protection as possible because, without it, eventually their hearing is likely to suffer. Also, many men, when con stantly harassed by high pitched noises, are likely to do poor work. Dr. Sataloff remarks, that it is curious that one . rarely hears any complaint from the men who work in a very noisy place. . - Siudent Pedaling To West Coast Detroit (UPI) A Los An geles graduate of the Univer sity of Oregon is taking a round about way home on a bicycle. Gary Swanson, 23, who plans to take graduate work in physics at California Insti tute of Technology this fall, arrived here this week end from Chicago, en route to the East coast. ."Before I go back to school I thought I'd like to travel around a little bit and see what the rest of the country looks like," he said. Swanson said the worst thing he has had to contend with in his bike traveling is the sun. Also a graduate of Northwestern Christian Col lege, he said he eats and sleeps at churches on the trip.
