Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. (UPI) Cyrus Eaton, the controversial Cleveland in dustrialist, will receive an honorary doctor of laws de gree at Bard college com mencement exercises Satur day. Eaton, who recently issued a critical , blast at J. Edgar Hoover and the Federal Bur eau of Investigation, calling them ''snoopers," is chairman of the board of the Chesa peake and Ohio Railway. He is a trustee of the University of Chicago, Case Institute of Technology, and Denison uni versity. ON DISPLAY Los Angeles &JPI) A collection of 35 paintings by Sir Winston Churchill went on exhibition Saturday at the Los Angeles County museum for the only public showing in the west. An invitational preview was held Saturday at which some 150 persons paid tribue to the British stateman's American heritage.- The showing will continue until July 6. WAR DANGER Yellow Springs, Ohio (UPI) Dr. Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize winning chemist, Satufday said that although the hydrogen bomb has ruled out the possibility of war, the danger of an accidental war still exists. v Pauling, who once was at Oregon State college said this "accidental war" could be brought about '"through some psychological or technological accident, or through the ac tion of some paranioc nation al leader." ORDER EVALUATION Washington (UPI) High administration officials dis closed Saturday they have or dered an intensive evaluation of recent international devel opments to see whether the United States should change its cold war tactics to meet the toughening Soviet line. A major question, they said, is whether to continue to seek negotiations with the Rus sians on points at issue or go back to the more rigid tech niques forced on the West .during the deep freeze of Stalin's last years. STRONG HINT Quantico, Va. (UPI) De fense Secretary Neil H. Mc Elroy hinted strongly Satur day that President Eisenhow er may fire Adm. Arleigh A. Burke because the chief of naval operations opposed the chief executive's defense re organization plan. McElroy startled a news conference at this Marine base by broadly implying the 57-year-old Naval chief may be on his way out because, in recent testimony before the Senate Armed Services com mittee, he failed to follow "the party line" on reorgani zation. , i WATERS RECEDE Russellville, 111. (UPI)-: Floodwaters of the Maverick Wabash river began receding in the Russellville-Palestine, 111., area Saturday and pushed toward the Mt. Carmel region 25 miles downstream. But there was no immediate danger at Mt. Carmel, al though some low-lying streets on the outskirts of the town were inundated. REFUSES TO INTERFERE Washington (UPI) Su preme Court Justice William. O. Douglas Friday refused to interfere with a lower court order blocking plans of four pacifists to sail their boat into the U. S. Pacific nuclear test zone. Douglas made no comment in rejecting the move. He held hearings on the stay motion Thursday. AGREE TO JOIN Rome (UPI) The moder ate Socialist democrats last night agreed to join the Chris tian Demorcats in forming i new government based on the May 25 elections. - Political sources said President Giovan ni Gronchi would ask Chris tian Democrat Amintore Fan fani Monday to form a new cabinet. The central committee of the Socialist Democrats voted 37 to 21 to ioin in the coali tion. The Liberals and the Re publcians, Italy's smaller par ties, also appeared willing to enter a Christian Democrat government. YACHT MISSING Tokyo (UPI) A yacht with at least two Americans aboard was reported missing Saturday between Formosa and Japan. The Japanese Maritime Safety board said it had been asked to search for the 83-ton, two-master yacht Sian of Los Angeles. It had a crew of six The captain of the vessel was identified as John Calvert The Kyodo News Agency said the crew also included an "American actor.",.. FAVOR EXTENSION Washington (UPI) A referendum of wheat farmers in the 38-state commercial wheat producing area Friday has assured marketing quotas on 1959-crop wheat, the Agri culture Department reported Saturday. The department said ..that 83.7 per cent of the farmers voting favored extension of the quotas for another year DISSAPPROVE CONFINEMENT, U K - Washington (UPI) The U.S. Court of Military, Ap peals Friday disapproved "solitary confinement" as a punishment for Navy men. (UPI) Fed eral Bureau of Investigation agents investigating the $105,- 155 holdup of the West 26th st. branch of the Union Bank here said Saturday they were "working on several leads and developments may re sult." A dozen FBI agents joined with state and city police in the hunt for three gunmen who pulled the carefully plotted holdup Friday.' The robbery was - the biggest in the' history of the city and the first bank holdup here since the 1920s. POSTPONE REVIEW Santa Monica, Calif. (UPI) Superior Judge Allen T. Lynch said Saturday that he would postpone a review of his decision placing Cheryl Crane in the custody of her grandmother pending the out come of an appeal by the girl's father, restaurateur Steve Crane. In April, Lynch ordered the 14-year-old girl, , daughter of actress Lana Turner, placed in the custody of hef maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mildred Turner, until his final ruling, expected June 26. Medical preparations take only a small part of the cas-l Mrs. Una Inch Mrs. Una Inch, who will re tire July 1 from her work as assistant superintendent , of county schools, was presented gifts and a bronze plaque Thursday. Mrs. Inch was presented a set of luggage, a plaque bear ing messages from the vari ous groups which had joined to honor the well-known edu cator, and money with sug gestions that it be used for travel. Funds for the project came from every school in the county, from the staff of Jack son County Public Health de partment and from Mrs. Inch's fellow workers in the county school superintend ent's office. . Mrs. L. G. Frink, principal of Griffin Creek school, was chairman of the project and made the presentation in Mrs. Inch's office. Mrs. Inch has worked with county schools, particularly rural districts, for more than 25 years. Boeing, Employees Reach Agreement Seattle (UPI) An agree ment was reached here Friday on a contract proposal to be presented to Boeing Airplane company employe members of the Aero Mechanics Union, Lodge 751. Officers of the parent union, International. Associa tion of Machinists, and Boeing made the announcement joint ly, saying the proposal will be presented for consideration of the membership of the lodge at a meeting Sunday.
