Ease- Off Slowly MepObamate is a useful drug and the purpose of the investigation was not o put up any red flags against its use, but rather to guide physi cians in using it in their pa ttsnts. Indeed, Wyeth Labora tories, Qiaks of "Equanil," supplied the meprobamate for the investigation. " . - . . - The scientists Advised phy sicians to build upomeproba mate doses from so small be ginning, ad -to take their patients off it by degrees rath er than abruptly. They experimented with 75 patients of the North Caro lina Mental hospital at Ra- leigh, who were divided into three groups of 25 each. One group was given a fairly heavydose of meprobamate daily for 40 days; a second group got half that dosage for the same length of time; the third was given identical ly appearing pills but these pills were chemical blanks At the end of 40 days, the patients getting meprobamate started getting the blanks. These are the conditions of science's classical "double blind test" whose results are supposed to be Unquestiona ble since no one knows what patients are getting ovhich kind of pills until it is all over. Of the patients who were on meprobamate, 44 had "withdrawal symptoms" when switched to the blank, which ranged from "mild" to "severe." High Death Toll Predicted July 4 Chicago (UPI) The Na tional Safety Council fears the July 4 highway death toll may surpass that of the record Me morial Day week end just past. The council said Thursday it expected 45 million motor ists to take to the road this July 4. . It said the Memorial Day week end, in which 380 per sons died on the roadways, dramatically pointed up the need for drivers' extra alert ness during peak holiday traf fic periods. "The fourth, which comes during the peak of the three month vacation season, usual ly brings more deaths from traffic accidents than Memo rial Day," the council warned. 'Clean' H-Bomb Firing Due Aug. 22 Washignton (UPI) The United States plans to demon strate a "clean" H-bomb at the Eniwetok Proving Ground in the Pacific around Aug. .22. The explosion, given the code name "pinon," is de signed to show this country's progress in reducing radio active fallout. It will be car ried out before U.N. scientific observers and a small group of reporters. The Atomic Energy Com mission announced the Aug. 22 date Thursday. But the AEC said weather or technical difficulties could delay the schedule. About 55 per cent of American families own their homes, a higher percentage than ever before. a fool of because of it. My whole family, including my uncles and aunts, seem to think it's very, very funny. They call my boy friend "Knobby Knees" and "Baby Long Legs." He is a track star at our school and there's noth ing wrong with his legs. I am so miserable at home because of this. Mrs. R. K. Sandra's ro mances really drive everyone in the family nuts. We would n't pay any attention to them if she wasn't constantly call ing everyone's attention to herself and her boy friend. Her current boy friend got his. nickname because she kept a -picture of him in his. track outfit in front of her at the table. She kept saying, "Isn't he handsome?" So one of her uncles final ly said, "Well, I think ; his knees are kind of knobby ' besides, his legs are too long for his baby face." . We all had to bust "out laughing when that happened, but Sandra flew into a real temper tantrum and insulted her uncle. She refuses to apologize, and my brother is really hurt that she should be so fresh. The Council: Perhaps some day someone will invent s foolproof formula for handl ing teen - agers in love, but until then families must just play it by ear. Girls and boys like Sandra appear to want to be teased just enough. They want their romances to have publicity and recognition from adults They don't really expect to be taken seriously because they have a sneaking suspi cion they aren't serious themselves. In the back of their minds xney Know tney are experi menting with their own feel ings and dramatizing to see how it sounds. Opposition to the romance, often expressed in the form of teasing, is grist for the mill. It adds another dramatic dimension to feelings that are often waning even while the moon-struck lover is sighing over her picture. Ignore the sighs and they become a moan, a lamentation. Com ment on the sighs and receive a shower of abuse in return. In Sandra's case, we think the family ought to lay off Knobby Knees" at this time but Sandra must be told in no uncertain terms that she is expected to treat her uncle and other members of her family with" respect, even when they hurt her feelings. Her mother might remind her that her feelings about a boy are a personal matter and if she doesn't want a public opinion on them she shouldn't advertise them to the world. Br EUGENI BURNS Ranger-Naturalist Alexandria Since the days of the Pharoahs, the parasitic kite has been the leading scavenger of the country, a position that he continues to hold despite the improvements of the 20th Century. I had a graphic example of MAIL TRIBUNE, M.dforJ, Ortten, Friday, June 10, 19lt this today when we passed a dead dog lying beside the road near one of the villages of the delta. The first of the large buzzardlike birds was arriving. When we passed by again, three and a half hours later, there was little left but the skeleton. Except for two of the kites that had taken to a nearby tree, the others had gone aloft again where I could see some of them, circling slowly in their continual quest for food. Though I have often watched the kites of our southern states, I continued to watch these for several minutes. Their flight is so easy, it is quite understand able why Pliny said that man got the idea for the rudder from the way the kite steers with its tail. f And since kites were the scavengers of England until the English decided a little over 100 years ago that something should be done with garbage and carrion be sides throwing it in the street, it is quite understandable why we speak of the toy tradition ally flown in March as kites. The flight of the toy is so like the effortless flight of the bird. Predominantly Brown The Egyptian kite is pre dominantly a dark brown bird. Perched, they are about two feet long. Wing - borne, they spread five feet from tip: to tip. Though spoken of as an "unclean bird" because of its disgusting diet, as well as the sloppy nests it builds,' its repu tation is not wholly deserved. Many an Egyptian has seen them washing themselves. Furthermore, some natural ists report that in relation to their size, there are probably fewer parasites on them than on the swallows and swifts of Egypt which are said to be crawling with them. As for the nests, one that I saw, though made of twigs and sticks, seemed to be sloppily put together with some old rags and even a kit of newspaper. No doubt it was strong enough, but it certain ly wasn't attractive like the nests of so many birds.
