(UPI Telephoto) The Medical Ovarian Exlracis Used For Menopausal Flushes Do Not Produce Cancer So often I am distressed when I see an unhappy wom an suffering from the terrible Hushes oi a hard meno pause. Per il a p s several times a night she finds her self sitting up in bed with the sweat pouring off her. I ask, Dr. .Alvarez "Why aren't you taking an ovarian extract of some kind? It could prob ably bring you great relief." And her answer is, "Yes, my Kind old doctor at home gave me 0.5 mg. of stilbestrol a day, and with that I was so mucn better. But tnen , my gynecologist found out what I was taking, and he was hor rified; he made me quit it, be cause he said it could give me a cancer of the breast. And that is why I am now getting so little rest and sleep; I am nearly out of my mind." Now, why did the gynecolo gist so fear the ovarian ex tract? I have asked dozens of doctors about this fear, and few of them could give me any logical reason for it. A few traced it back to some work done years ago with mice. These tiny mice, for all their lives, were given huge doses of the estrogen, and some of them developed can cer. For many years I have been prescribing estrogens for women in the menopause and as yet I havent seen any case in which I thought a can- kcer had been produced by the drug. Also, as I travel about the country, I keep-, asking distinguished teachers of gyn ecology if they fear the use of estrogens at the "meno pause, and most? of them tell me, "No." A few years ago some Bri tish experts on cancer wrote a, book in which they told of their experiments with estro gens given to small animals. These experiments took away their fear of the production of cancer, and they said that there was no chance at all of producing it, if the taking of the medicine was occasionally interrupted for a few weeks. Recently, doctors who have been giving huge doses of es trogens to old people whose spine has softened and caved in, remarked at a convention that, with the big doses, they had not yet seen any produc tion of cancer. The other day it was shown that large doses of estrogens given to hamsters (rat-like animals) could pro duce cancer, but only in males, never in females! Hence it is that I feel strongly that we doctors ought to get over our old fear of estrogens in the treatment of the meno pause, l do not believe we ever had any good justifica tion for the fear. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand tnat it would be impossible for him to answer "requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
