I don't snare the rod. Andrew J. It's not rieht for teenage children. - Georgia J. I was widowed at an early age and left with two young children a eirl and boy to bring up single handed. I have had to be mother and father and I feel I have done a good job. Every one, admires my. children, now 15 and 17. One reason for their ennrl behavior is my firm convic tion that the rod should not be spared. I have adminis tered sound and svstematip spankings with the hairbrush wnenever they have mis behaved, and do it to this very day. Recently, I remarried and my husband said he was shocked at this methnrl nt discipline. I am shocked he aoesn t realize how effective I have been as a parent and, besides. I feel he has no risht to interfere between me and my children. Andrew J. I nevpr In. tended to interfere between Georgia and the children, but this thing really srets mv enat I just don't think it's right to spank children of that age. une day Georgia's daugh ter came in late and mv wife lifted her dress and spanked ner in my presence. I didn't think that was right and I was amazed that the girl took- it without a word. It is true the children are exceptionally well - behaver? nice kids. They aren't fresh like other teen-agers, and do as they are told. Mv wife savs the proof is in the pudding, ana the ends lustifv the means. There is something in mat, ana yet I just can't take it when I see a full-Brown bov or girl getting spanked like that. The Council: It is true spanking will sometimes bring a bothersome child up short. It is a auick and easv way of reminding a child that authority exists and he'd Better get into line. 1tT. 4 I . c uau i agree, nowever. that the business of bringing I up a child is essentially a problem of discipline. Chil dren, like adults, must ex press their fears and discom forts in some form. It will usually be a form which in curs some disapproval. If the adult's answer is a slap or a beating, the child either rebels and becomes worse than ever, or gives in and ceases to ex press himself in the undesired form. The problem remains and the child seeks another form of expression. Some times he hits on a worthwhile. is forced to build up resent ment against the Darent. or to give in and seek punish ment for the many guilts that plague him. He nevr learns to build up his own inner authority, based on his knowl edge of right and reasonable behavior. Georgia's SDankins of a creative form. Often he does not. - Certainly with teen-agers, whose problems are often complex, spanking is a most inadequate method. The child teen-age girl in the presence of her stepfather smacks of abnormal behavior. That "the girl took it "without a word" is not a good sign. She acted as an accomplice with her mother in an action grossly improper. We think Georgia should recognize that she, personal ly, has a problem. She should discuss -it in detail with a competent authority a doc tor or a social worker at tached to a family agency. (Copyright 1958. General Features Corp.)
