Yet he still receives an aver age of 4,000 letters a day: "Forty per cent of that mail is from non-Catholics," he added. Every letter is an swered by his staff. He was asked if, with all his talent, he had ever considered going on the stage, and his instant reply was, "No no no, none whatever. The Lord gave me this talent, I am returning the use of it to Him." In connection with this, he also stated that in college, his speech professor told him he was without a doubt, the worst pupil he had ever had, and advised him never to try to speak in public. At one point in the inter view, a small .boy pushed his way into the group, and marched straight up to the Bishop. "Who are you, and what are you doing?" he asked with small-boy candor. The auxiliary bishop of New York reached out his hand and drew the small boy into the circle of his arm. Touch ing himself on the chest in a manner familiar to his TV audiences, he said, "I am Bis hop Fulton Sheen, and these men are reporters interview ing me for the newspapers." Flash bulbs popped as the man and the boy sat together, and the warmth of his person ality began to show in the twinkle of the dark expres sive eyes. The appearance of the small boy released the tension of began to talk with all the charm and vitality seen on his TV appearances. After a few more questions, he stood and shook hands with the handful of people about him, and in response to a request of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman, he very graciously autographed a card with his television trade mark: "God Love you Ful ton J. Sheen." H0RNBR00K Pair Meets Bishop Sheen By KATHERINE CHAPMAN f the interview, and the bishop Hornbrook A once-in-a- lifetime honor was experi enced Saturday evening, June , by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Chap man, when they had the priv ilege of shaking hands with Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, and visiting briefly with him The Chapmans had driven to Portland, Ore., that day to meet a friend. Miss Anna L Richling, of Omaha, Neb., who was arriving on the 9:30 plane at the Portland airport to spend her vacation with them -While they were waiting at the airport, an earlier plane arrived from New York bringing Bishop Sheen, who was to address the graduating class of Central Catholic High school A real thrill for them came when they were permitted to sit in' on a press interview with Bishop Sheen, with re porters from the Portland Oregonian and the Journal and then meeting the bishop afterwards. in xne interview, ne was asked a question about poli tics and replied that he "had no interest in politics, but ask On Sunday, the Chapmans and Miss Richling attended mass in the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother in Portland, then left for Hornbrook via the Oregon coast. After an all night stay in Tillamook, they took the tour through the Tillamook cheese factory, then drove as far as Gold Beach, and the next day took the trip up the Rogue river in the mail boat to Ag ness and had dinner at the Singing Springs ranch. This is a never-to-be forgot ten experience, and highly recommended for anyone in this area looking for an out-of-the-ordinary outing for two or three days. A visit to a redwood grove completed the sight-seeing en route home. Visiting Mrs. Ella Rose on Tuesday were her friends, Mrs. Fred Cox and Mrs. T. W. Sanford, of Ashland.
