bases on balls, two hit batters
and three errors. Seven runs
went on the board in the first
framO on one hit, five walks,
a hit batter, to errors and a
sacrifice.

St. Louis (UPI) Von
McDaniel has dropped an
other rung on the baseball
ladder one year after he
made his major league debut
with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Optioned to Houston of the
Texas league last month by
the. Cardinals, the 19-year-old
right-hander was transferred
Friday to Winston-Salem of
the Class B Carolina league.
McDaniel, signed to a
$50,000 bonus contract by the
Cardinals, made his major
league debut against the Phil
adelphia Phillies on June 13,
1957. He won his first game
three days later against the
Dodgers and finished his
rookie year with a 7-5 record.

Los Angeles Dodgers came up
with a major deal only 62
minutes before the deadline
on the West Coast when they
sent pitcher Don Newcombe
to the Cincinnati Redlegs for
first-baseman Steve Bilko,
pitcher Johnny Klippstein and
cash.
Newcombe, a 27-game win
ner in 1956 hadn't won a sin
gle game this year for the
Dodgers.
Report that Newcombe was
trade bait have recurred fre
quently since the Dodgers
picked up and moved to the
West Coast. '
As part of the deal, Cincin
nati optioned pitcher Charlie
Rabe to the Dodgers' Montreal
club of the International
league.
Pitcher Don Bessen was
placed on Los Angeles' dis
abled list at the same time.

Willie Pastrano of Florida,
the world's fourth - ranked
heavyweight contender, out
boxed Italy's Franco Cavicchi
and cut his nose and left
cheek Sunday in scoring a
10-round decision before an
estimated 20,000 at the Bo
logna municipal stadium. Pas

Neal Tripp, with 356 out of
400, was high rifleman Thurs
day in a VFW Rifle and Pistol

Increases Gap

The gap between the first
and second divisions in the In
ternational league is growing
bigger as the clubs near the
halfway mark of the season.
In Sunday's action, league
leading Montreal won a
douhleheader from Miami, 7-2
and 9-4; second-place Toronto
took two from Havana, 7-3,
and 91; third-place Rochester
swept Richmond, 6-2 and 5-1;
and Buffalo defeated Colum
bus, 4-1, in the nightcap after
the Jets took the opener, 6-2.
Columbus, which occupies
the fourth and last playoff
spot, now owns a four and a
half game lead over fifth-place
Havana.
Missouri and Idaho are the
top lead-producing states.
