(UP1 Telephoto) MeMStudento fcefe for Horn Medford studenlo in grades one through six scored well above the national norms in tests given grade school pupils this spring, according to a report of educational achieve ment results. Students in grade one in the Meaford district's seven elementary schools scored a 2.7 in word recognition and 2.6 in paragraph reading com pared with a national average of 1.8, the report showed. The Medford average score indicated that local first grade children did on the test "what would be expected of a second grader in the sixth and sev enth months who took the san test," officials explained. The national average indicat ed first graders achieved a score of a first grader in the eighth month of school. Word Recognition . Grade two pupils in Med ford received a 3.78 for word recongnition and 3.88 for paragraph reading compared with the national norm of 2.8. In grade three, local stud erts averaged Well above 4 in reading, word meaning, spelling, language and arith matic, compared with the na tional norm of 3.8. Pupils in grade four aver aged well above 5 compared with the national norm of 4.8. Grade pupils' achievements ranged from 5.7 in arithmatic computation to 7 in word meaning, compared with the national norm of 5.7. The low score on arithmetic computa tion was due to the lack of percentage and decimal in struction in the fifth grade locally, school officials said. That score jumped well above the national norm in the sixth grade. Other grade scores averaged well above 7 compared with 6.7 for the na tional norm. m -Mir-r- i j rY"rrMf-mfom .r mm Local Man Name!
