A movie on the "American Royal" was shown, and then club members judged se-fitral classes of steers from pictures shown on film strips. Members gaveo reports on their individual projects. It was decided to have the next meeting on July 11 in the home of the leader, Don Brad shaw. Plans 3or this meeting include theudging of several classes of beef cattle. After the meeting, refresh ments wer served in the home of Cecelia Fichtner. Marsha Watson, Reporter. 4-H Griffin Creek Cooking Our meeting was called to order May 10 by our presi dent, Christine Helman. We had our business meeting and then we started on our pro jects. Watkins, a depart ment manager at Jackson County Federal Savings and Loan association, has an nounced his resignation effec tive June 14. Watkins, formerly of Rose burg where' he was associated with his father in ranching and the. real estate business, plans to form a real estate partnership with John C. Ma lone, well known valley real tor. The new partnership will be formed July 1. The office will be located at the present Malone real estate office, 526 East Main st., Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Watkins pur chased the Clark Thomas property on Meyers lane when they moved here from Rose burg three years ago. Recent ly they purchased Bill Isaacs Big Rock Lodge on Rogue river. They reside there with their three children. Cub Scouts Pack 1 Picnic St. Mary's Cub Pack 1 held their annual picnic at Tou Velle state park on Wednes day, June 11. Games and various contests wereplayed during the after noon with ribbons awarded to the winners. In the evening a potluck supper was served by the par ents with the cub troop fur nishing hot dogs, ice cream, punch and coffee. The special event of the evening was the advancement of eight cubs into the scout troop of St. Mary's school. A bonfire, torches and Indians were all a part of this cere mony in which the following boys received their webelos badge and a three-year serv ice pin for cub scouting: James Carnegie, Kenneth Cor liss, John Miller, Steven Nel son, Larry Pickell, Ronald Roberts, Daniel Seitz and John Zenor. Other awards also present ed during the evening were: Bobcats, David Patterson, Mi chael- Denman, Daniel Tighe, Michael Brophy, Randy Pick ell, Tommy Nave, Robert Sherzinger, John Leavins and Dennis Toomey; lion badge, Bruce Johnson; bear badge, Richard Hanawalt; silver ar row, Steven Strobel, Bruce Johnson, David Nicoletti, Eric Jensen, Gerald Gritsch, Tom my Clark, Philip Hollen, Kurt Krueger, Mark Froeber, Dan ny Mircisz, Steven Rose and Christopher Corliss; gold ar row, Daniel Stinsen and Billy Pruett. TOMORROWl QUALITY At Lowest Prices 1 3q Homewarei 1 1 School Asked fo Withdraw Books Portland (UPD The Port land Urban League's educa tion committee has asked that 2,000 volumes of a reading reference book be withdrawn from Portland public schools. .The book, ''Adventures for Readers," used in all the eighth grades in the city, con tains a selection portraying an objectionable Negro sterotype, the committee said. The . 1947 edition of the book was adopted for use in Portland public schools in 1950. It is this edition the committee objects to, they said, because of the portrayal of a fat Negro cook who ap pears as a member of a fam ily circle in a short play and speaks poor English 'in a Negro dialect. The committee made no for mal protest but met inform ally with Dr. Norman Hamil ton, assistant superintendent of schools, John Holley, direc tor of community services for the league, said. . Although the cook has only a few lines in the play, "she represents what can be easily recognized as one of the harsher Negro stereotypes," Holley said. Two Tuberculosis Cases Reported Two cases of tuberculosis, one in Jacksonville and one in Central Point, were among communicable diseases report ed to the Jackson county de partment of health during the week ending June 13. ther cases reported were mumps, 15 Medford, 2 Camp White, and one each Talent, Gold Hill and Central Point; German measles, 7 Medford, and 1 each Ashland, Central Point and Camp White; mea sles, 3 in Medford and Ash land and 1 in Camp White; scarlet fever, 2 Central Point and 1 Medford. Four cases of chicken pox were reported in Ashland and 1 .Medford, and 1 case of whooping cough in Jackson ville, influenza in" Medford, meningococcal infection in Medford and 5 strep throat Ashland. Four cases of penumonia al so were reported in Medford. Grange Notes Griffin Creek Grange Griffin Creek Grange met in regular session June 12, at which time the secretary's re port was read and approved. Home Economics chairman Isabel LeVander thanked the women who entered the sew ing contest. Although no prizes were received, the club was well represented. The HEC will meet at the home of Mrs. Clyde Sturgill Thursday, June 19, for a pic nic luncheon followed by a business meeting. All mem bers are urged to attend and friends are welcome. Herman Kemping reported on agriculture. He said that hay in the valley was badly damaged by the rain but some of it is being bought up by or chardists for fertilizer. He also told of the grasshopper menace in Colorado and said that airplanes are being used to spray the insects. Some of the planes in use ore from Jackson county, he said. A petition concerning the Rogue Basin Flood Control program was presented by Josephine county and a mo tion was made and approved that the range join them. Mr. and Mrs. William Dar by are attending the State Grange at Eugene. Harold Tolle'is reported to be con fined to his home by illness but is improving. Herman Kamping reported that Pamona Grange put on the fifth degree before a large number of Grangers at Klam ath Falls last week. NEGOTIATIONS , ADJOURNED Detroit (UPI) Auto- con tract negotiations Saturday stand adjourned for the week end, with negotiators match ing the unhurried pace they have set for 12 weeks. The United Auto Workers will resume negotiations at 1 p.m. Monday at General Mo tors, 10 a.m. Monday at Ford and 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chrysler. ACCEPT INCREASE London (UPI) London's strike-immobilized buses will be back on the job, probably late this week. Leaders of 50,000 striking busmen voted Friday night to accept a $1.25 pay increase and call off the six-week walkout. It was almost cer tain the members would ap prove their leaders' decision at a mass meeting this week end. FACTORY BURNS Live Oak, Fla. (UPI) Fire of undetermined origin burned through a boat factory and a tobacco warehouse here Friday night, destroying both and damaging a cement plant. Damage was unofficially esti mated at S500.000. All of Like Oak's firemen, using four trucks, fought the FIRE KILLS FOUR Philadelphia, (UPI) Four children died Saturday when fire swept a West Philadelphia home on the fringe of an area described as a "fire belt" by city council more than a year ago. It was this city's worst fire involving children's deaths since seven youngsters died in a tenement fire in March, 1957. JOIN ATTACH Tokyo (UPI) The Com munist radio reported Satur day that North Viet Nam's Reds have joined the world wide attack on Yugoslavia's President Tito, branding him a "revisionist" who has "smeared the Socialist camp." A Peiping broadcast quoted Lo Xuan, a member of North Vietnam's Lao Dong party, as saying Tito aims at undermin ing world Communism. VOICES HOPE Washington (UPI) Key members of the Senate Aiva- tion subcommittee voiced hope Saturday that the group can complete action quickly on legislation to provide a single air control agency as demanded by President Eisen hower. Chairman A. S. Mike Mon roney (D-Okla.) said the sub committee will resume hear ings Monday on its own bill introduced two weeks ago to provide such an agency to control civilian and military flights. Policeman Cut by Four Teenage Girls Albany, Ore. (UPI) Three Albany policemen suffered multiple cuts and bruises Fri day while trying to jail four teenage girls who had es caped from -Hillcrest school for girls in Salem. Officers said the girls scratched and kicked and screamed while they were be ing hustled out of a restau rant and taken to jail. At the lockup one of the escapees set off a fire alarm. The girls were 14 to 17. OREGON blaze for more than two hours before controlling it. Smoke was reported seen as far away as Valdosta, Ga., 85 miles to the north. A LITTLE ROCKY'! . Washington (UPI) Secre tary of State John Foster Dulles flew home ahead of schedule from a Princeton university reunion because of a new outbreak of violence in Lebanon. At the airport Dulles said he came back because he would feel "a little easier" at home base. He said he felt "that the conditions in the Middle East looked a little rocky and disturbed." BACK HOFFA - New York (UPI) Four Detroit police officers back ed Teamsters chief James R. Hoffa Friday in his claim that he was in Seattle on the day the government has charged he was getting wiretap in structions in Detroit. Other witnesses testified that Owen Brennan, Detroit Teamsters officials, had been injured in a racing accident which would have prevent ed him taking part in the wiretap demonstration. Andrija Artukovic, 47, for mer minister of interior of the "independent State of Croatia" set up by the Nazis during the war, now lives in nearby Surfside with his wife and five children.
