At the outset it will be sent to all new cor dealer in the state, but other inter ested in receiving the month ly lists can get them on re quest to the department of motor vehicles. Previously such informa tion has been available only through commensal firmf and a charge was mad. Present plans call for list ing all American, as yell as several foreign makes of vehicles. Kelly-Miller Circus Plans local Visit The Al G. Kelly-Miller Brothers circus, claimed to be the largest circus, will be in Medford Tuesday, July 1, for a matinee and night perform ance. To substantiate their claims, the circus has invited the pub lic and press to visit the show at the Sheriffs Posse grounds at 9 a.m. July 1 to see the un loading, feeding aifd watering of hundreds of animals. Acts include a trained hip popotamus, , trapeze artists, African and Asiatic elephants, clowns and educated bears. o . ( UPI Telephoto) Sweat Gland Tranquilization, Claimed 'Side Effect' of Drug By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York (UPD-p Illus trating the unknown com plexities of body chemistry, one of the newer "tranqui lizing" drugs seems to impose so much tran quility upon the sweat glands, the taker is set up for a heat stroke in ex tremely hot and humid weather. This discov- Beios sith ery was maae by Dr. H. F. Ext of the Mid dletown (N.Y.) state hospital and caused him to sound an alarm through the medical society of the state of New York. Extreme tranquilization of sweat glands was a brand new "side effect" for any tran quilizing drug. 7 The new tranquilizer which Ext believed produced it is "man - made," representing chemical additions and sub tractions to and from the mol ecule of phenothiazine. Its trade name is "Pacatal" and try-outs with hundreds of mental - patients have -shown it to be an elfective drug. I But the persons who take it and the amounts they take must be watched closely when the weather is hot and humid, Ext said. During a heat spell last summer, there were sev en cases of heat stroke among 3,650 patients of the Middle town hospital. All seven, however, were among the 23 patients who were being traquilized by the phenothiazine derivative. It should be kept in mind that they were getting daily doses much larger than those pre scribed to tranquilize people who merely are untranquil and are not mentally incap acitated. Like the other tranquili zers, the precise chemical ways by which this tranquil zer produces tranquility are not known. It acts on the cen tral nervous system and on the autonomic nerves. That is obvious from the effects it has. Ext reasoned that it also exerts a blocking effect on chemical discharges from nerve ends which have power ful influence on bodily be havior. This, he continued, sets up chemical chain reactions that led to increases in body tem perature while at the same time causing a "breakdown" of the sweating mechanism" by which the body eliminates excessive heat. Completely Inactive Stale Heat stroke represents a complete break-down, he said, and the sweat glands are tranquil to the point of not working. Ext said all was well with his patients until hot, humid weather imposed an .added load which their heat elimin ation chemistry could not bear. His advice to colleagues was to observe "extreme cau tion" while treating mentally ill patients with the tranquil izer during heat waves, since the first symptoms can be overlooked in the mentally ill. This caution also was urged for persons being tranquilized in tropical climates to which they are not acclimated. Ext, mentioned especially mem bers of the armed forces serv ing abroad. The dosage should be reduced, the fluid intake should be kept high, and ac tivities should be reduced to the minimum'. Medical Researchers Prepare Major Assault on Alcoholism By LOUIS CASSELS United Press International Washington UPI Gov ernment medical researchers are preparing to launch their first major assault against a disease which afflicts more than five million Americans. The disease is alcoholism. It ranks with heart disease, ca n c e r and mental illness as one of the nation's four major health problems. The govern- iouis Cassels ment has been spending millions each year combat the other three. But only piddling sums have been available for research on alco holism. As a result, medical science knows little about its causes, and far less than it needs to know about treat ment. Congress is about to change that picture. Tucked away in a multi-billion dollar appro priation bill now moving through the Senate is a $700, 000 item earmarked for alco holism research to be conduc ted under supervision of the National Institute of Mental Health. Although $700,000 is not a lot of money by comparison with outlays for other medi cal research, it is far more that cause one drinker out of than has ever been invested before in scientific studies of the physical, psychological and environmental factors , ' SMILING at a reception in German Embassy, Washing ton, is West German Presi dent Theodor Heuss. Even more important than the sum appropriated is the" fact that Congress is saying for the first time it wants the National Institute of Mental Health to do something about alcoholism. In the past, Congress al ways has followed up this kind of order by granting larger appropriations once the research is underway. The research funds are in cluded in a $2,967,955,581 bill to operate the Department of Health, Education and Wel fare, the Labor Department, and related agencies during the 1959 fiscal year starting July 1. The bill already has passed the House and is before the Senate Appropriations Com; mittee. Committee, sources said there is no controversy over the item for alcoholism. Divided on Reason Scientists are sharply divid ed on why one drinker be comes an alcoholic and anoth er does not. Some, like Prof. Roger J. Williams of the University of Texas, believe a physiological imbalance in the "appetite regulating" mechanism cre ates an abnormal craving for alcohol. If true, it may be pos sible to work out a special diet or gland therapy that willg abolish the craving. Others - explain compulsive drinking i n psychological terms, as a symptom of anx iety, inferiority feeling or some other personality con flict. A third school holds that excessive drinking over a long period of time causes changes In the body go that alcohol as sumes the characteristics of a foodstuff required by th cells.
