I want to go on a trip with my friends. . Mrs.. R. C It will be a ter rible blow to his father. '.,. Joel C. I am 18 and about to enter the service, and; I have - a somewhat unusu&J problem. . i ' My, father and I have al ways been very close friends and have spent lots of time together fishing, camping and hunting. Of course, I appreci ate all he has done for me in spending all his free time with ; me, but I'm beginning to want to get away more with my own friends. For instance, my father is planning a camping trip for the two of us before I go away. Now, I would rather go on a bicycle trip with some of my friends from school.' I mentioned this trip to my fa ther and he laughed at it, so I didn't tell him I wanted to go. I did tell my mother about it, and she says I'm all wrong. Mrs. R C. Ronald would take it as a terrible blow if Joel ever said he wanted io spend his last vacation before going into the service without his father. Ever since Joel was bqm, his father has done everything in the world to make him feel that they were going to be tfie best of buddies. We had three- daughters before Joel's birth, and Ronald was so happy '.to have a boy he said he would do everything to help him en joy a real boy's 'ife. i I think it -is very selfish 'of Joel to think of hurting his fa ther in thi$ way. He will soon go away for a long time, arid then he may be going off on his own. This may be the lait opportunity for : Ronald an'd Joel to enjoy a vacation to gether. The Council: From the in formation t given, we have some doubts about the strofig friendship that is supposed &o exist j between Joel and His father. J If this relationship were all it ought to be, Joel should have :rto difficulty in explafh ing to his father that he hits a yen to go on a cycling trjp with friends. Undoubtedly, Ronald hid the best of intentions in re gard to his son, but unfortu nately a rather selfish ele ment has crept in. He has ap parently become deeply de pendent upon his intimate tie with Joel. He may be so frightened at the idea of a break in this relationship that he finds it necessary to ridi cule activities he senses Joel might enjoy without him. Although both parents and children want to have friend ly relations with one another, they should be awaf e they can never really be "buddies." This is as true for'girls with their mothers as for boys and their fathers. The parent must always to some degree represent author ity to the child, and both boys and girls need the opportunity to break free of this authority and enter the world of their equals. v . . - A reasonable parent, more concerned about his child's welfare than about his own feelings, will welcome evi dences of the child's growing independence. ; If Joel's father has no ob jection to the bicycle trip out side of his own disappoint ment at losing the "boy's com panionship, we think he ought to face the happy fact of his son's maturity and give his blessing to the trip. Shriners Hospital Treats Children Portland The Portland unit, Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, has treated more than 8,500 children from the Pacific northwest as bed patients since its founding in 1924. It was honored during National Shrine Hospital Day recently. The unit has given out-patient treatment to more than 20,000 children.
