The game was halted in the fifth inning and the victory given to Adrian on an Oregon State Athletic association rul- Mays Sparkles But Giants Lose San Francisco (UPI) The San Francisco Giants, who either win games in the last inning or blow big leads, lost another one the hard way Fri day night by succumbing to the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, after leading 4-0. Willie Mays hit his 14th home run and boomed into the league leadership with a batting average of .433 while having a perfect evening at the plate, but that was about the only bright spot for local fans. Jerry Lynch clubbed a three-run homer and Willard Schmidt pitched five-and-two thirds innings of effective re lief ball for Cincinnati. Pirates, Phillies Take League Wins By United Press International Frank Thomas and Rip Re pulski . each drove in five runs Saturday to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates and Phila delphia Phillies to victories in National League games. Thomas included two home runs in his slugging spree, but even so the Pirates had to ral ly for three runs in the 10th inning to beat the Chicago Cubs, 8-6. Repulski had a ho mer and two singles as the Phillies trounced his ex-St. Louis Cardinal teammates, 15-6. In the only other N.L. day game, Alan Worthington's re lief pitching and timely hit ting sparked the San Francis co Giants to a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Redlegs. Thomas' two homers gave him 16 and tied him with Ernie Banks of the Cubs for the N.L. lead. His five runs-batted-in gave him the lead in that department with 49. However, the score was tied Rogue Valley A, B Teams Score High Portland Rogue Valley County club's B team accum ulated an average score of 344 in the Alderwood Golf invitation in Portland Satur day. Medford's A team piled up a team average of 309 for the 18 holes played Saturday. The remaining 18 holes will be played today. Leland Clark was the lead er of the B team and accum ulated an 82 for the 18 holes. Other scores on his team were Del Berg 84, Tom Teutsch 92, Clayton Lewis 86. Leader for the A team was William Miller with 73. Others on the team and their scores were Bud Haupert 80, Ed Hall 79, Carl Schmidt 77 (substitute for Lee Flink). Adrian won it easily behind the stellar playing of Phil Hatch who. not only pitched no hit ball but batted in three runs on three hits. Adrian got off to a slow start in the first inning with one run then brought in five in the second inning. The team scored no further runs until the fifth inning when it piled up six more to end the game on the OSAA ruling. In the A-2 division Central trounced Myrtle Creek 6-0 in seven innings of play Satur day night. A two run homer hit by Central's pitcher Lukens was the high spot of the game. He also pitched a two hit shutout to further cinch the game for his team. ' Myrtle Creek remained scoreless for all seven inings. Central failed to score in the first inning, piled up two runs in the second inning and one in the third inning. In the third frame it scored two runs and one more in the fifth inning. at 5-5 in the top of the 10th when Gene Freese tagged Pitcher Dolan Nicholas for a leadoff home run. The Pirates added two insurance runs and needed them as the Cubs scor ed once in the last of the 10th. Other homers were hit by Bill Virdon of the Pirates and Bobby Thompson of the Cubs. Repulski hit a three-run homer in the first inning of his game to start the Phillies on their way to the slugfest win. En route, five Card pit chers helped out by issuing 13 walks. Winning Pitcher Curt Simmons had three of the Phils' 17 hits and drove in two runs and Wally Post wound up the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth. Stan Musial hit his 11th hom er for the Cards. Alan Worthington relieved in the Giants game with the score tied at 3-3 in the sixth inning, snuffed out a threat and held Cincinnati hitless the rest of the way. He him self drove in the run that put the Giants ahead with a single in the sixth and also hit. a sacrifice fly in a three run rally in the eighth that clinched it. A .714 pace since May 7 has brought the St. Louis Car dinals surging back into Na tional league pennant con tention. Buried in last place with a 3-15 record exactly one month ago, they're only four games out of first place today after a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The victory move.d the Cardinals over the .500 mark with a 23-22 record, for the first time this season and en abled them to gain ground on both front-runners the first place Milwaukee Braves, who lost to the Los Angeles Dodg ers, 4-3, before. 54,639, and and the San Francisco Giants, who bowed to the Cincinnati Redlegs, 5-4. The Chicago Cubs, whipped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-1, in the other NL game. Yankees Win The New York Yankees, meanwhile, restored their American league lead to 8V2 games with a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Indians as Mickey Mantle hit two homers and Bob Turley won his ninth game. In other games, the Baltimore Orioles swept the Kansas City A's 2-1 and 3-1, the Detroit Tigers walloped the Washington Senators, 11 2, and the Boston Red Sox shaded the Chicago White Sox 3-2. The Cardinals, who have won eight of their last nine and 20 of 28 since their May 7 low-point of the season, scored two runs in the fourth inning on two singles, a walk an error and an infield out and added another in the fifth when Stan Musial's sacrifice fly brought in a -tally. Plaque Honors Ike In Manila Palace Manila (UPI) A plaque honoring President Eisenhow er has been installed on the wall of President Carlos B. Garcia's office in the presi dential Malacanang Palace. Garcia unvelied the plaque Friday, paying tribute to Eis enhower as one of the fathers of the Philippine National De fense Act. President Eisen hower used the office when he was a major and later a lieutenant colonel serving as military adviser to the Philip pine commonwealth from 1935 to 1939. A native of Stewartsville, Ohio, Sam's chief complaint is they made the strike zone too small. He's been plagued by wildness all his career but he's led the NL in strikeouts twice and currently leads it again with 66 whiffs.
