Powell Dismissal Motion Denied San Francisco (UPI) Fed eral Judge Louis E. Goodman has denied a defense motion to dismiss sedition charge: against former Shanghai pub lishers John and Sylvia Pow ell and their former assistant Julian Schumann of New York. He ordered the three to tend trial July 14. The Powells asked for the dismissal on grounds that they were unable to defend themselves because they can not bring witnesses from Red China. The Powells, who are American citizens, were pub lishers of a Shanghai periodi cal during the Korean con flict, which supported Red charges that the United States forces were waging germ war fare. The United States gov ernment has officially denied the charges. Tugboat Union . Drops Picket Line Coos Bay (UPI) Some 00 employees. of the Weyer haeuser Timber company were idled for awhile at North Bend and Allegany Wednes flay when a striking tugboat union established a picket line in front of the Weyerhaeuser sawmill and woods operations The employees declined ,to erose the picket lines. But Wednesday afternoon the tugboat union withdrew the picket lines, and work re sumed at the Weyerhaeuser operations. Local 17 of the Internation al Organizations of Masters, Mates and Pilots went on strike Monday, against Coos Bay tugboat operators after wag negotiations became deadlocked. About 40 men were on strike. , Young Mother, Son Die in Accident Susanville, Calif.-a(UPI) A 18-year-old mother and her young son from Elackioot, Idaho, were killed east of here Wednesday when the car in which they 'were riding went out of control and crashed into e concrete bridge ebutment. The victims were identified Is Mrs. Joann Slippey and her son, James. Mrs. Slippey 's husband, James Lowell Slip pey, 28, and Slippey's mother, Mra. Anne Slippey, 33, were injured seriously. Rhonda Fleming Planning Divorce Hollywood (UPI) Actress Rhonda Fleming and her hus band, Dr. Lew Morrill, today planned to end their strife- riddled six-year-old marriage. The couple issued a joint statement Wednesday an nouncing their intention of getting a divorce. Miss Felming and Morrill were wed at Kanab, Utah, in 1952. She divorced him in Mexico in May, 1956, but they were reconciled. Both have a kchild -by a previous marriage. Education To Be Discussion Topic Portland (UPI) Educa tors, school board members and about 90 laymen repre senting 13 states will meet at Timberline Lodge June 19 21 to discuss "Quality Educa tion A Citizen Responsibility." The meeting is sponsored by the National Citizens Coun cil for Better Schools. The 13 states represented will be from the Council's western region. The scholarships are three of a group sponsored by the state system of higher edu cation annually for a limited number of outstanding stu dents enrolled in college and for some promising high school seniors who will be entering college.
