Discovered by a forest rang er 12 years ago, the giant has been named in honor of Gen Douglas Mac Arthur. . The MacArthur pine is 140 feet tall, has a circumference of 16 feet and 8 inches and a crown spread of 48 feet. It is believed to be well over 250 years old. Estimated to contain 8,000 board feet of lumber, the huge pine could provide enough material tp build a 24-30-foot home. At current rates for white pine lumber, which comes in several grades aver aging $200 a thousand board feet, the MacArthur pine is worth $1,600. 'Hoisy'TacuIfy Part of Tradition Madison, Wis. (UPI) A "noisy" faculty is part of the University of Wisconsin tradi tion according to Dr. Fred H. Harrington, assistant to the president. Harrington said the faculty wants to help decide policy and has the right to do so by the state law. This attitude is also passed along" to the students, he said. "They are not as easily or dered around as the bulk of those in the United States, he added. "Because of this, Wis consin student leaders have a more difficult task than most." He told a group cf campus leaders to "expect to be criti cized" but added that is was sometimes desirable to "tell them off." Man, 75r Recalls Bicycle Journey I Oak Hill, W. Va. (UPD Claude N. Blackwell observed his 75th birthday recently and recalled how he came here from Colorado in 1903 on a bi cycle. He was 21 years old when he went to Denver with his father. Matt Blackwell, to look for work. They didn't like it there so decided to return to West Virginia. Claude said he started out on a bike while his father drove a team of mules. His father sold the mules in Mis souri and returned to West Virginia by train while Claude pedaled on. Roads then were composed of dirt and rock and going over mountain terrain was the toughest part of the trip, he said. Easy!
