Nixon's recent tour of South America was too fresh in Cen tral American minds. Officials Concerned Officials declined to go be yond the Department's an nouncement which said: "Up until now it has not been pos sible to schedule the visit at mutually convenient dates for all of the countries concerned. Dr. Eisenhower will delay his trip in the expectation that satisfactory dales can shortly be arranged for travel to the six countries concerned." Here's one method: Become buddies with that person fid geting in the back seat of your car or right there beside you, for that matter. "Two heads are better than one when they're behind the wheel of a car," the National Safety Council says. It be lieves that the so-called back seat driver may hold the solu tion to the traffic accident problem. "We're in favor of motor ists combining their driving knowledge and skill with the help other passengers in the car can give," the Council says. Bad Connotation It agrees that the term "back-seat driver" has a bad connotation. The motorist who's been subjected to nag ging "advice" from .the rear understandably takes a dim view of interference with his driving. "But with the proper spirit on both sides, backseat driv ers can be a real help," the Council says. How? 1. Let your wife, for exam ple, who used to sit with noth ing to do on a trip, be your copilot. Her observations a car sneaking out from a side street, a quick turn in the road ahead K:an take a big load off your mind. 2. Studies Show that the irritated driver is more acci dent prone. The wife can help hubby cool off when he's up set over slow-moving cars or heavy traffic. 3. Giving other persons in your car something to keep them from getting bored makes the trip go faster for both of you and keeps fric tion at a minimum. Many Other Details "In addition to her lookout duties, the backseat driver can handle many other details to make motoring more relax ing," the Council says. "Let her light your cigar ette, keep down the roar of your kids in the back seat, and chart your course. There are a thousand , and one things she can do for you while you are driving. "Successful business men well know the value of dele gating authority. Yet, behind the wheel of a car an execu tive will try to handle the whole job of driving often with disastrous results. "Why do all the work, when minor parts of the job can be handled just as well by your wife?" the Council asks. "Bringing the back-seat driver up front with you in other words, giving her re sponsibilities on a trip eases your job of driving. "It may save a life yours, or the life of the back-seat driver who used to get on your nerves." TALMADGE WILL Fort Lauderdale, Fla. VN rwifcoth r SLmr Parties I I I ins a By ELMER C. WALZER UPI Financial Editor New York (UPI) For once Wall Street is calling re tention of high taxes a favor able item for the stock mar ket. The street apparently has given up hopes of a tax cut Cl this vear witn political oppos- reduc- Eimer waizer tion. Some look for a modification of ex cises later on, perhaps on autos and freight transporta tion. Standard & Poor's states the case as many in the street view it: "The ability of the list to take this long-awaited tax de cision in stride is mainly at tributable to the fact that the economic climate "has cleared sufficiently to make across the board tax reduction un necessary. "Viewed in retrospect, it is obvious that the latter 'was frantically seized upon as a possible means of checking a recession which its- advocates feared at the time might snow ball into a major depression. "Instead, general business now affords fairly convincing evidence that it has largely checked its downward slide, if it hasn't already touched bottom. May Be Ahead of Business According to the current issue of Newsweek a sizable body of Wall Street believes the stock market is running ahead of business that it has been a bit too exuberant. - One investment man told Newsweek he had the feeling "the market is getting itself into 'the same state it was in last July expecting more good news than it will get." L. O. Hooper, analyst for W. E. Hutton & Co., notes that the easy credit policy plus smaller demand for funds from business has turned some new money into the equity market. He believes, however, a great many people with a great deal of cash are "just waiting" for the more favor able prices they feel are in evitable. Growing Short Interest This abundance of funds awaiting investment could be a cushion when and if demand for shares becomes less avid, he feels. Another cushion, of course,' he points out, is the sizable short interest which seems'to keep on increasing. In this connection, Alexan der Hamilton Institute points out that history proves that a large short position is not a guarantee against sharp de clines "and it should not be considered as a springboard for a prolonged rise in prices. "The shorts are not partic ularly nervous at this time and there appears to be no haste in covering action on their part." The institute, admitting fur ther good news from Industry might send the market into further new high ground, warns "it would be more pru dent to look for another sharp reaction near the midyear when second quarter earnings can be better appraised."
