Only one baton session is planned. Hitchcock, Oswego, spent $10,734 on his campaign. Thornton's Exponss In the same district, Dem ocratic Attorney General Rob ert Y. Thornton spent $707 to win nomination while Don Metheny, Brooks, spent $377. In the 2nd district Marion T. Weatherford spent $3,898 to gain the GOP nomination while incumbent Democrat Al Ullman spent $251. John Johnston spent $2,476 to win the Republican nomi nation in the grd districl com pared with f 250 for Richard Hill and $361 for George Alt vater, Johnston's Republican opponents. oPul E. oGeddes, Roseburg Republican, spent $429 to win th Republican nomination in the 4th conf ressional district while Democratic Rep. Justice Gordon Sloan spent 6,250 in his successful bid for the other Supreme Court seat compared with $3,086 for Senate President Bovd Overhulse, Madras, and $2, 57ft for Samuel M. Bowe. 'Grants Pass. Milfon-Fjeewaler Blaze "Harms Man Walla Walla (UPI) g.n 86-year-old Milt on-Free water, Ore. man, Alec Hironimus, was in critical condition at a Walla Walla hospital today atfer b3g found unconscious in his bed when fire broke out in a Milton-Freewater scrap iron warehouse. The man's living quarters were on the second floor of the warehouse, firemen gaid. Attendants said Hironimus was not burned but suffered exereme smoke inhalation. The fire, which took one . hour and 20 minutes to con trol, threatened for a time the Milton-Freewater community hall. Centennial Flour mill and the Utah Cannery, all ad jacent to the warehouse. Arson Probed in Burns School Eire Burns (UPI) Two officers from a State Police arson souad todav were investigat ing a fire t (ttstroyed the r e c e n 1 1 y-completed Union High school. The oSIcers said the inves tigation may take several days. The blaze started at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday and within two hours burned the build ing to the ground. The new school was to serve about 400 students from the Burns and Hines area this coming fall. Pupils, Teachers Poisoned by Food Marion, N.C. (UPI) Prac tically the entire student body and three teachers of an ele mentary school here were fihting off the agonies of food poisoning today while authori ties sought the caust of the ovftbreak. "Baked ham, which was on the lunch menu, was suspect ed a the source of the poison ing whichQ sent 202 students and the teachers into acute pain and shock lite Tuesday afternoon. Only 25 students at Eugene Cross Elementary School seemed to have escaped the poisoning. The rest were hos pitalized. However, authori ties said none of the students or teacfters was seriously ill. McDowell county health of ficer Dr. W. F. E. Loftin said samples of the lunch menu which, in addition to the baked ham, included slaw, green beans, baked apples, ice cream and cookies had been sent to the state toxicol ogical laboratory at Raleigh for examination. Loftin said he believed the ham probably caused the epidemic. The American public spends $3,212,000 a day, $26,413,000 a weel and $1,373,464,00 a year for newspapers. Graham Preaches On Holy Trinity San Francisco (UPI) Evangelist Billy Graham preached Tuesday night on the Holy Trinity before a Cow Palace audience of 9,000, the smallest crowd which has heard him since he started his San Francisco Bay area crusade on April 27. The drop in attendance was credited to interest in Cali fornia's primary election and a baseball game between the Giants and Milwaukee. On the Holy Trinity, Gra ham said: '"Maybe you don't under stand this, but neither do I. No man can comprehend the mystery of the Holy Trinity." He also discussed the role of the Holy Spirit which he said was "within all of us and He is in constant warfare with the flesh. Our hearts are the battlegrounds. The Chris tian life is a life of conflict." More newspapers are sold every day than the total num ber of passenger cars regis tered in the United States. Jupiter, Thor Work Speeded for European Sites Washington (UPI) The Defense department today moved at top speed to pro duce and dispatch to Euro pean launching sites this country's first long range bal listic missiles the Jupiter and Thor. Defense officials said a de cision had been made for "full scale" production" of both the 1,500-mile weapons to arm Air Force squadrons in Britain and on the Euro pean continent by the end of the year. The United States, they said, is putting its "heaviest bet" on the 1,500-mile Inter mediate Range Ballistic Mis sile (IRBM) to match a possi ble Russian lead in 5,000 mile Intercontinental Ballistic Mis siles (ICBM). The Air Force's Atlas and Titan (ICBM) are at least year away from use fulness. Serves Same Purpose "Since Western European allied nations are within easy IRBM range of the Soviet Union, the 1,500-mile Ameri can weapon serves much the same purpose as any Russian capability to launch ICBMs from Soviet bases against the United States. By the end of this year the first Air Force Thor squad ron is scheduled to become operational in England and the first Jupiter squadron in a yet-unannounced launching site on the European conti nent. Each squadron will be armed with 15 of the deadly nuclear weapons. Cardinal Sfrifch At Rest in Chapel Chicago (UPI) Samuel Cardinal Stritch was laid to rest in the bishop's chapel of Mount Carmel Tuesday, cli maxing an ecclesiastical pag eant that had no equal in the history of American Roman Catholicism. Following the severe splen dor of solemn pontifical re quiem mass crowds gathered in streets of the city he called "home" where an estimated million persons paid their last homage., Both sides of the street were lined for the last mile by uni formed policemen, plumed Knights of Columbus who formed an arch of sabres, and nurses whose red and blue capes waved gently in the brisk wind under the warm ing sun. The cortege' proceeded down a natural canopy of elm trees, then stopped before the small rise on which the chapel rests.
