HORNBROOK School Graduation Held MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ, Oregon, Friday, Mar SO, 1958 J By MRS. H. Ji. CHAPMAN Hornbrook At grammar school graduation exercises held May 24 at the Grange hall, Anne Rutledge and Steve McMaster were award ed the American Legion cer tificates and medals. The awards are made on the ba sis of scholarship and citizen ship, and are granted each year by the American Legion throughout the country to en courage scholarship among grade and high school stu dents. Loren Cummins re ceived an honorable mention certificate. Presentation of the awards was made by John (Skip) Shinar Jr. Besides those men tioned, other members of "the graduating class were Billy Jones, Lauran Paine Jr., Clyde Peters, Percilla Peters, Tim Wells, Richard White, Hellen Whitten and Patricia Williams. Salutatorian was Lauran Paine -Jr Loren Cummins read the class history, Tim Wells the class prophecy, and Pat Williams the class will. Valedictorian was Anne Rut ledge. Steve McMaster acted as master of ceremonies for the program. Guest speaker was Roy Zanni Jr., candidate for sheriff of Siskiyou county- At the close of the ceremo nies, gifts were presented by Mrs. Frank Cardoza, presi dent, in behalf of the Parents club to the teachers, Mrs. Norman Martin, Mrs. Jeanne Cunningham, Mrs. Loren Cummins, and Principal Har ley Baker; also to Mrs. Gladys Jones, custodian, and to school bus driver Louie Frei tas. The Parents club also made a gift of a phonograph to the school. Presentation of the class pins was made by Lauran Paine Sr., and Ray Blanken ship and Jack Cross present ed the diplomas. The three men comprise the local school board. The invocation was given by Rev. E. V. Har greaves of the Methodist church, and the benediction by Rev. Gordon Titus of the Hornbrook Bible church. The school picnic was held Tuesday, May 27, with the children going by school bus or car to Ashland. After an hour or so on the playground at Lithia park, the rest of the day was spent at Jackson Hot Springs swimming and pic nicking. All of the teachers and several mothers and pre schoolers attended. The parsonage in Mon tague was the location of the meeting of the Women's So ciety of the Hornbrook Meth odist church Thursday. Mrs. E. V. Hargreaves, wife of the pastor, was hostess. Attend ing the meeting were the president, Mrs. Henley Claw, son, Mrs. Bertha Bradley, Mrs. Clara Howard, Mrs. George Brautlacht, Mrs. Leon ard Sloan and son Sammy, Mrs. Minnie Bloomingcamp, Mrs. Ardon Bums, Mrs: Mary Taggart, Mrs. Ernest Adams, Mrs. Harry Chapman and De nise Hargreaves. Plans were made for the potluck dinner to be served at the Hornbrook church Saturday, May 31, when the district superin tendent, Rev. "Ben" Gould of Chico, will be present for the quarterly conference. First Lieutenant Ronnie Hagen of the Air Force visit ed here last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bear. He was en route from his home in Seattle to a base at Reno, Nev. Mrs. Margaret Phillips re turned Saturday from Palo Alto where she had been on a short visit with her daugh ter, Mrs. Leah Lenartson. Mrs. Lenartson returned here with her mother and will re main until next Saturday. The Music club met Satur day at the studio of their teacher, Mrs. Paul Greene. Attending from Hilts were Marsha Simmen and Judith and Linda Fremd; from Yre ka, Patty and Robbie Greene, and from Hornbrook, Penny Barnum, Danny Metzen and Linda and Lydia Greene. The youngsters played from mem ory new pieces they had learned since their recital last month. In a quiz on folk mu sic, Marsha Simmen won first prize, and she also won first prize in the older group in a quiz on music theory. In the same quiz, Patty Greene took first prize in the beginner's group. Visitors on Sunday at the Paul Greene home were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hartley, who were en route home to Ash land from Weed, Calif., where they had attended the grad uation recital of one of Mrs Hartley's pupils, Martha Ann Bryant. Mrs. Hartley is a teacher for the Ashland branch of the Sherwood Music School of Chicago, and also is a former teacher of Mrs. Greene's. Be sides several piano numbers, "Miz" Martha, as she is known in Weed, also present ed, vocal solos. Her voice teacher is Mrs. Genevieve McCorkle of Mt. Shasta, who is the teacher for the Sher wood school in that area. The recital was held at the Mt. Shasta Baptist church in Weed. ' Hornbrook Grange will serve its annual Memorial Day dinner on Friday at the Grange hall, from 11 a.m. un til 5 p.m. This will be their regular baked ham dinner, but since the holiday falls on a Friday, a meat substitute also will be offered. Mrs. John Griffin was host ess on Tuesday for the Con tract Bridge club. Mrs. Laura Swinnerton held high score, and Mrs. Duane Hamner, sec ond high. 'Others playing were Mrs. Ed Smith, Mrs. Bertha Bradley, Mrs. Fred Mills, Mrs." Marshall Horn, and Mrs. Frank Ohlund and Mrs. Henley Clawson who were substitute players. CHILDREN?
