May 30, 1938 BUTTE FALLS Students Are Promoted By MAY JO HARRIS Butte Falls A flash of lightning and a clap of thun der were the prelude for the eighth grade graduation held Thursday evening at the high school auditorium. The commencement pro- program included procession al by Mrs. R. W. Harris; In vocation by the Rev. Howard Simmonds; history of class by Harry Dalton: high school challenge by George Bray; presentation of class by Char les Stratton; diplomas by Earl Remson, incoming s c h o o board chairman; Benedicition by the Rev. Leslie Martin and recessional by Mrs. R. W, Harris: ' , Throughout -the course of the program the Grade School Mixed Chorus offered two numbers, "Thank You Ameri ca" and "Over the Rainbow' under the direction of Dean Boggan. Eighth graders receiving diplomas to enter high school were Danny Remson, Darlene Edmondson, Martha Dalton, June Buttram, Kathy Olson Steven Deen, Linda Webster, Garland Ruddick and Dixie McConochie.- The Good News club presnt- ed a program Sunday evening, May 25 at the Community Bible church as a resume of several months classes to fam ilies and friends. Pre-schoolers, firsts second, third and fourth graders sang songs, repeated Bible verses that had been learned and told stories on the wordless book which' is made up of five colored pages. Teachers were Mrs. Lewis Crammer, Mrs. Harry Dalton, Mrs. How ard Simmonds, Mrs. Don Jol liffe and Miss. Virginia McAllister. Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders sang songs, re peated Bible verses and told stories of the wordless book. Teachers for this group were Mrs. L. W. Berck of Eagle Point, Mrs. Ted Freden- burg, Mrs. Duane Burton, Miss Martha Dalton and Miss Darlene Edmondson. Mrs. Berck was director of Good News club. Charles Stratton, grade school principal, and grade school teachers expressed ap preciation to the PTA for the sponsorship of the annual pic-S nic. i i All grade school teachers were in charge of activities Activities -included races- of 'nil tvnM for all pranks First- second and third place rib bons were awarded winning students. Following the pic nic a baseball game made up of mixed teams was played. To wind up the day report cards . were passed out and students dismissed for the year. Two-Way Wonder Bible school will start June 9 and continue through June 20 at the Community Bible church from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Friday. All children 4 to 13 years of age are eligible to attend. Anyone i wishing to help at Bible school will be welcome. Primary election was held at the grade school gym Mayl 16. Out of 285 registered vot ers, 133 voted, a percentage of less than 50 per cent. Election board members were Mrs. Harry Dalton, MrsJ F. E. (MaBnie) Poole, Mrs Henry Tygart sad Mrs. Bobj Edmondson. Counting board members were Mrs. Wm. Ed mondson, Mrs. Doug Tinch Mrs. William (Doc) Bowen and Mrs. Keith Scott. Mrs. Bruce Pingle went tol Eugene to visit with her daughter, Miss Julie Pingle, at the University of Oregon for Mothers week end. While there Mrs. Pingle was a guest of Douglas Fullerat a Moth ers breakfast at Christian house. Douglas is Mrs. Pingles future son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Page Staul fer are spending the summer in their trailer house at Steve Wilson's logging camp. Wil son is now located several miles above Union Creek. Several out of towners were guests in Butte Falls attend ing the 1938 High School graduation. Commencement) exercises were held , in the Butte Falls school gymnasium May 23. Seniors receiving diplomas were Mike Conley Dayle Hawkins, Nita Haw-I kins, Jim Irwin, Cody Rambo Jim Sheppard, Juanita Shep pard, Pat Sheppard, Dean Smith and Edith Wright. Pat Conley and Miss Dean- na Louk of Ashland attended graduation, . Pat and Mike Conley are brothers. Both Pat and Miss Louk attend South ern Oregon college. Mrs. Olive Cavanaugh ofl Sacramento attended Com mencement exercises and is now visiting with her daugh ter and family, the Kenneth Hawkins. Nita and Dayle Hakins, both graduates, are two of Mrs. Cavanaugh's grandchildren. Mrs. Cava naugh has made plans to visit with her family until July 4 St which time she will re turn to Sacramento. Hereafter Mt. Pitt members will me.et once a month. Next meeting is scheduled June 15 and has been set tenatively to meet at the home of Mrs. Don Jolliffe. Mrs. Eddy Trefren and chil dren of Medford were recent overnight guests at the home of her parents, Mr, and Mrs Keith Scott. Mrs. Trefren and Dale Smith made the trip for graduation. Surgeon Arraigned On Murder Charge New York (UPI) Dr Rodigo Sarmiento will be ar raigned today on a first de gree murder charge in the fatal stabbing of a 33-year-old Brooklyn nurse. A Kings County Brooklyn grand jury Wednesday indict ed the 38-year-old Filipino surgeon who surrendered to a newspaper -reporter. April 30, four days after Miss Mar garet Kabak was found stab bed to death in her home. Police maintain Sarmienta killed Miss Kabak because she broke off their romance on learning he had a wife and four children in the Philip pines. If convicted, he could re ceive the death penalty.
