'Qualifying play for the Al- Good Year Likely for NFL Teams By EAJtL WRIGHT New York (UPI) The Na tional Football league, repre senting the country's fastest growing professional sport, appeats headed for another banner ttendance total in 1958 despite the recession. The 39th NFL season is more than four months away; but a United Press Interna tional survey showed today tnt seven of the 12 clubs al jrtady have set or expect rec 4 season ticket saies for the I9SS campaign. All reported lieket sales were running hd of last year when the Jaague drew arecord attend ance of 2,836,318. In recession-hit Detroit, the lions almost certainly will have a record season ticket sale before they raise the NFL championship flag. The Lions have sold about 39,000 season tickets. Sales are running "far head of last year when the Lions sold a record 39,844 be fore the season opened, jtave Set Record . The San Francisco Forty "Mlners, who lost the playoff the -Lions for the 1957 Western division crown, have sold a record 31,000 season tickets for 1958. The Baltimore Colts, in the 1157 Western division race vntil the last day of the regu lar season, have sold 26,367 season tickets. Sales are run in g about 1,100 ahead of last year's pace. In Green Bay, the Packers already have set a club rec ord by selling 23,223 season tickets for the four games they will play at their new 12,250-seat stadium this year. The Rams in Los Angeles sold 24,500 season tickets last year and sales so far are run ning equal to or ahead of the 1957 pace. Redskins Doing Well In Washington, the Red skins reported 1958 season ticket sales running more than four months ahead of the 1957 pace. The New York Giants set a club record for season tick et sales last year with slightly more than 12,000 and expect to top that in 1958. ' ' The Cleveland Browns, de fending Eastern division champions, said they had no exact figures but that renew als by fans who held season tickets last year are running ahead of 1957 sales. The Philadelphia Eagles re ported their regular custom ers are renewing season tick ets about 16 per cent ahead of last year's pace. At Pittsburgh, the Steelers reported their season ticket sale running about 800 ahead of last year at this time. Ed Milne and Del Berg vs. Nulton and Nuich. Blame Passed On Recent Clash At Mi. Scopus Jerusalem, Israeli Sector (UPI) Israel and Jordan blamed each other today for starting the clash at Mt. Sco pus in which a high United Nations officer and four Is raeli soldiers were killed. Albert Grand, a spokes man for the UN Mixed Arm istice Commission, refused to say whether' the MAC had ordered a ceasefire when Col. George Flint, Canadian chief of the commission, was kill ed. He said Flint had rushed to the Mt. Scopus area when both the Israelis and Jordan ians complained about snip ing from the other side. He was hit by a bullet while frying to .rescue two Israelis from a crossfire. There was confusion about which side the bullet came from. A dispatch from Amman said Jordanian military of ficials charged that a force of 12 Israeli military policemen started the fight by crossing the armistice line from, Mt. Scopus an Israeli enclave in Jordanian territory east ward toward Issawiyeh vil lage. Government officials on both sides- expressed deepest regrets for Flint's death. Condolences from Jordan ian King Hussein and . Pre mier Samir Rifai were re ceived in Jerusalem. McKenzie Pass Road Will Open Thursday Salem (UPI) McKenzie Pass highway through the high Cascades will be opened to traffic at noon Thursday. W. C. Williams, Oregon state highway engineer, said snow removal would be com pleted by Thursday as a re sult of recent warm ' weather in the mountains. The route is not normally opened for summer travel-until the mid dle of June." ' WHO, ME? Red Sox won game, 8-4. : Salmon Fishing Best of Season On Lower River Salmon fishing near the mouth of Rogue river is the best so far this year, by far, Mrs. Bill Fitzstephens of Lucky lodge reported by telephone to a Medford sporting goods firm yester day. She said that just about all fishermen in the area of the lodge about 10 miles up river from Gold Beach had their limits by 11 a.m. yesterday. Up to now salmon fish ing has not been too good on the lower Rogue. Cuts Bring Suspension For Boxers New York (UPI) Middle weights Otis Woodard and Eddie Andrews were under automatic 30-day suspensions today because of brow cuts suffered Monday night when Woodard again beat Andrews in a TV fight at St. Nicholas arena. Woodard of New York stopped Andrews of Lowell, Mass., at 2:41 of the fifth round because ' of gashes on both brows. But Woodard, meanwhile, had his own left brow so ripped in the second round it will require plastic surgery. Last April 14, Woodard won a split 10-round decision over Eddie. Andrews, weighing 159Ji pounds to Woodard's 160Vi, suffered a 10-stitch gash on his left brow Monday night in the fourth round, and a four-stitch cut above the right eye in the fifth. Referee Arthur Mercante said the flow of blood prevented An drews' seeing properly. PROSPECT Club Schedules Shoot By MICKIE LARSON ' Prospect Prospect Gun club will hold a gun shoot June 1 at the Jamboree grounds. The public is invited to attend. The club has in stalled a loader for shotguns which is in operation. Prospect Garden club met at the home of Mrs. Tressie Vaughn May 20. Officers for the coming year were elected. They are Blanch Millard, president; Lorraine Lowry, Separate Meets Held by Churches Pittsburgh (UPI) The Presbyterian church in the USA and the United Presby terian church of North Amer ica will hold final separate assemblies here today in pre paration for the merger of the two churches Wednesday. The new church, to be called the United Presbyter ian church in the USA, will hold its general assembly fol lowing the merger. A moderator will be elected at the opening session of the general assembly and govern ing officers will be named. The general assembly will adopt detailed plans for the consolidation, and will be the supreme governing body. The new church, in em bracing about three million members will form one of the nation's largest Protestant groups. The general assembly will hold sessions here until June 4. A sporting club as Oslo, the capital, of Norway, is experi menting with its boxing rings to soften the impact of knock downs. The boxing ring has been fitted with foam rubber cushion under the canvas. The speaker was Mrs. Na gel from Eagle Point. She spoke on the uses and growth of herbs. Mrs. Lowell Ash has been a patient in a Medford hospi tal where she underwent mi nor surgery. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Town were honored at a going away party May 16 at the Prospect cafe. They will leave soon to make their home'on the coast where he will operate a trail er court. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Malloy which is in Skeet- ers camp burned Friday noon. 1 . A flue fire at 6 a.m. at Wild Wood at Mr. and Mrs. Erwin (Slim) Snodgrass' home resulted in no damage. High school graduation will be held May 28 at 8 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Grade school will be let out Tuesday noon. The children will return Thursday morn ing for report cards and then dismissed for summer vaca tion. The service sation which has been operated by Myrtle and Ward Blane for the past six years is under new man agement. Bill Grives is the new manager. Bob Krell and Burd Max well were guests of the Lions at their regular meeting on Wednesday, May' 21, at Union Creek. Mrs. Sharold Chapman, Mrs. Jack Ells and Mrs. Jack Rienks met at the home of Mrs. Bill Ferns Wednesday, May 31, to work on the name plates which will be used at the Spring festival in Medford June 4. The forest service is spon soring a "first aid course" at Union Creek for personnel each Monday and Thursday for four weeks. The instruc tor is from Crater Lake. Undoubtedly, Manager Walt Alston was hoping Drysdale would pick up his perform ance the way teammate Carl Erskine (3-2) did Monday in holding the Phillies to two hits in nine innings. Confident Mood The victory left Erskine in a confident mood and feeling that his arm had recovered some of its strength. He shut out St. Louis a week ago. "It felt good, right through to the end of the game," Erskine said. "In fact, in the last two games, it's been stronger than it has for a cou ple of years. Come to think of it, I guess 1953 was the last full year it felt good all the way through." Chuck Essegian's single off Erskine in - the fifth inning spoiled the Dodger's no-hitter and Willie Jones ruined a shutout in the eighth. Scores on Sacrifice Jones singled and'scored on Richie Ashburn's sacrifice fly to give Philadelphia pitcher Robin Roberts (4-5) some help, but not enough. Roberts lost although he pitched a six hitter. Los Angeles scored two runs in the fourth when Gil Hodges walked, Gino Cimoli singled and Don Zimmer hit a double off the left field wall which failed being a homer by perhaps a foot. Longshoremen Slow Sugar Strike End Honolulu (UPI) Gov William Quinn has disclosed that Hawaii's sugar industry accepted without reservation his plan to end the 115-day-old sugar strike but the Interna tional Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's union asked for further bargaining time before making a decision. . The union made it clear it was neither accepting nor re jecting the governor's pro posed 16-cent an hour increase on a three-year contract, but there were indications that the plan was acceptable to both sides. Unbeaten Scanlon, now boxing out of San Francisco, is a 'picture fighter' who won 27 of his 28 starts and had one draw. He combines rare cleverness with punch. He has knocked, out 10 opponents. He has beaten ex-champs Wallace (Bud) Smith and Lauro Saias. Even Money Rogers of Chicago, also a good boxer-puncher, won 15 of his 22 bouts and had three draws. Seven of his victories were by knockouts. He is 22, the same age as Scanlon. ' Betting is at "even money" for their bout, . which will be televised nationally by ABC. Bold Ruler Will Run in Carter New York (UPI) Trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons said "Ok, we'll go." That simple declaration by the 81-year-old trainer means Bold Ruler, the 1957 "Horse of the Year," definitely will start in the $50,000-added Carter handicap at Belmont park Friday, despite a stag gering 135 pound assignment. Pheister Named Benson Coach Portland (UPI) Ron Pheister, former University of Oregon center, Monday was named head football coach at Benson high school here. - Phiester, , a graduate of Grant high school, succeeds Ralph Harper who retired from coaching after the 1957 season. Sputnik Noted As Challenge San Francisco (UPI) Russia's one and one-half ton Sputnik is an achievement which cannot be minimized and . has "reemphasized the challenge to America," ac cording, to Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker. Furniture Barn - Bell Heads PCL Hurlers San Francisco UPI Gary Bell of San Diego, with 6-2 record, leads the Pacific Coast League hurlers with an earned-run average of 1.21, according to statistics released today and including Sunday's games. Bell has been in 67 innings, allowing 17 walks and strik ing out 5, to lead the league also in the latter department. Ernie Broglio of Phoenix leads in wins with seven, against a lone loss. However, he has an ERA of 4.98. Carlos Bernier of Salt Lake City tops the hitters with a big .420 mark after connect ing safely in 32 consecutive games. He has 55 safe blows in 132 trips to the plate. Dick Stuart, also of Salt Lake, leads in homers with 15 and runs-batted-in with 45. Willie McCovey of Phoenix is tops in. total hits with 60. Van Brocklin Purchased By Philly Eagles Portland (UPI) "Right now my answer is yes and no" that was the reaction of Norm Van Brocklin when asked if he intended .to play football for. the Philadelphia Eagles. '--;' The Eagles acquired the star quarterback in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. . "I've played football more than half my life now," Van Brocklin said Monday night. "It's been good to me. I'm going to have a family confer ence talk it over with my wife." Van Brocklin is northwest manager for a California pipe coating company. He set up the firm's Portland office two years ago.- "If -1 play again, I , must make up my mind to stay in football, turning to coaching when I'm through playing. The Eagles bought me to play. They're hunting for a quarter back," he said. Beavers Prepare For PCC Series Corvallis (U.P.I.)- Coach Ralph Coleman was busy to day readying his Oregon State Beavers for their PCC baseball play-off Friday and Saturday against Southern California's Trojans. ': Southern California posted a seasons record of . 20.2 against college opposition and the Trojans hold victories over professional teams, in cluding the Los Angeles Dodg ers, in exhibition games. Coleman was expected to start sophomore lefthanders Gary. Moore and Ray Lunde in the first two games against the Trojans. Moore and Lunde accounted for 10 of OSC's 18 victories this year. The Friday game will start at 2 p.m. Saturday's first game will start at 1 p.m. with the second game, if necessary, to follow immediately. MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Tueiday, May 27, 1958 11 Lombardi Sold To Portland Portland (UPI) Vic Lom bardi, left-handed pitcher, was purchased today by the Portland Beavers of the Pa cific Coast League from the San Diego Padres. Lombardi was to start for Portland to night against Phoenix. Lombardi, 36, won 6 and lost 6 last season for San Diego and had a 3.32 earned run average. Portland sent lefthander Ray Bauer and an undisclosed amount of cash to San Diego in return for Lombardi. Buffalo Grabs Third Sraight By United Press International The Buffalo Bisons, last year's governor's cup cham pions, are getting ready to surrender their lease in the International league's cellar. The Bisons, whose heavy bats had been idle for the first month of the season, slammed three homers Monday night as they edged Havana, 7-6.-It marked the first time Buffalo has put together three straight victories this season and it moved the last place New Yorkers to within 3Vi. games of fifth place.. Elsewhere, Montreal retain ed its 4V4 game hold on first place with a 6-5 conquest of Richmond; Toronto edged Co lumbus, 5-4, despite two hom ers by the Jets' Howie Goss: and Lyrin Lovenguth went all the way in pitching Rochester to a 2-1 victory over Miami. T2Vi Mueller, Basilio Scheduled Bout Portland (UPI) German middleweight Peter Mueller, who will fight Phil Moyer at the Portland auditorium here next week, agreed Monday to fight Carmen Basilio in Pitts burg in July. Fred Sommers, one of Mueller's handlers, said the offer was received Monday morning, and indicated there was no doubt about accept ance. ;( Mueller arrived in the United States from Germany last Friday. Besides the Ba silio bout, he also has sched uled a fight with Gene Full mer. However, no date will be set for the Fullmer fight until the Basilio bout is ar ranged, according to Sommers.
