OSC Physicist To Study Radio Wave Breakdown Corvallis The breakdown in radio wave transmission that occurs in high altitude flights because of differences in atmospheric pressure will fee studied this year by Dr. James J. Brady of the Oregon State college physics depart ment under a research grant announced this week. A breakdown in radio wave transmission has been found to occur for missiles which travel through a certain layer of atmosphere at high alti tudes. Dr. Brady explained This failure is probably a re sult of the fact that air at re duced pressure loses some of its electrical insulating prop erties, ha said. Compltx Problem The breakdown is a com plex problem that complicates flights at heights from lou.uuu to 200,000 feet, he pointed out. It happens because the air at that altitude is a fairly good conductor of electricity nd high frequency sparks oc cur in the atmosphere sur rounding the antennas. When sparking occurs, loss of con tact with the ground results. Breakdown of the air is not a serious problem at either the low altitudes nor at satel lite heights where a fairly food vacuum exists, Brady noted. Grant Received A grant of S10.000 has been received by Brady from Boe ing Airplane company, Se attle, for the study. Dr. Brady's work will in volve basic studies of the breakdown process, using micro-wave equipment and other special laboratory ap paratus to simulate atmos pheric conditions at high alti tudes and at varied transmis sion frequencies. If basic understandings of the breakdown process can be achieved, it may be possible that design of equipment can reduce the probability of breakdown, he concluded.
