An explosion rocked the pow der room of the destroyer es cort USS Silvcrsttin Wednes day, injuring a Navy officer j and four enlisted men. One of the victims, a sea man, was in serious condi tion with burns over 40 per cent of his body. His identity was withheld pending notifi-1 cation of his. family. j The other four suffered only j minor mjuries. Pacific Fleet ; headquarters identified them j as Ens. Kenneth A. Schulch ter. 24. Pontiac, Mich.: Petty Officer 1-c Grafton Weeks, 23, Sampson, Ala.; Fireman Robert A. N. JlcCuiston, 19, JIacomb. Okla.; and Sonor man William B. Mover, 13, Fort Worth, Tex. The Navy said the explo sion and flash fire occurred in a compartment containing depth charge-firing cartridges as the men were entering. The cause was not determin ed immediately. Svimmer To Try Columbia Swim Portland HP Bill McGill, a local long distance swim mer, said today he would try in about two weeks to swim from Bonneville dam to the Interstate bridge on the Co lumbia river. He said he might possibly try to continue on St. Helens, which would be about 75 miles.' He said he hoped to break the mark set by Bert Thomas of Port Angeles, Wash., who swam from the dam to the Portland city limits. Seeks Campaign On Anti-Smoking Washington HP Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) to day proposed federal-tobacco and alcohol taxes be used to help the states educate school children against drinking and smoking. Neuberger, a teetotaler and non-smoker, introduced a bill authorizing federal grants in aid to states "for assistance in programs they may wish to follow to inform and educate children with respect to the harmful effects of tobacco and alcohol." FLIGHTY FRIEND - Milwaukee HP Edward Pietrowiak was behind -bars today because of his brief friendship with a flighty pigeon. Pietrowiak gave the bird an all-day ride on his shoulder while making a tour of local bars. The pigeon finally got tired of -bar-hopping and flew away. Pietrowiak jumped in his car to chase it. bumping several other vehicles. He was sentenced to six months in the house of correction. 4 CLUB -mi NEWS Griffin Creek Cooking Club Our meeting was called to order May 20 by our presi dent, Christine Helman. We said the pledge and nominated a new secretary. Our new secretary is Sharon Hugdahl. Then we went on with old and new business. Our meet ing was adjourned and we started with our project of cooking eggs. After cooking the eggs we played a game with bean bags. The evangelist decried the '"sex revolution that is degen erating the nation"' in a gen eral outline of testimony he planned to deliver today be fore a state Assembly subcom mittee investigating porno graphic literature. His appearance was under subpena ordered by assembly man Louis Francis (R-San Mateo), chairman of the sub committee. The San Francisco News a Scripps-Howard news paper, in an editorial called Francis' action "headline hunting at its worst." Graham at first said his busy schedule would not per mit him to testify before early July. However, he later was able to sandwich his appear ance between a series of speaking engagements today. 'Legislation alone will not correct the problem of ob scene literature," Graham said. "There is a need for a change of moral climate. The nation is in need of a moral bath to cleanse it from its ob session -with sex which may eventually destroy us before communism. "That is one of the reasons the country so desperately needs a religious awakening to change the nature of the people," the 39-year-old Bap tist minister said. gr ' l - ,! Relations Forum Set For Portland Salem HP Plans for the eighth Oregon forum on inter-group relations in Portland June 7 were announced today by Labor Commissioner Nor man O. Nilsen. Nilsen said the keynote ad dress will be given by Gov. Robert D. Holmes at the all day meeting at Portland State College. Justice George Rossman of the Oregon supreme court will speak at the noon luncheon. The annual event" is spon sored by the labor bureau's civil rights division and the civil rights advisory commit tee to prevent and eliminate discrimination in bus i n e s s, government, or other fields. Open House Scheduled At Hedrick Tonight The annual spring open house at Hedrick Junior High school will be held between 7 and 9 o'clock tonight. A pro gram is scheduled to start at 8 o'clock. Y Indian Guides to Meet Saturday Five YMCA Indian Guide Tribes will meet at TouVelle State park Saturday, May 24, for a Longhouse meeting. Y Indian Guides is a father son program for boys in the first three grades and their dads. The tribes meet every other week to conduct a meet ing and plan special trips and events. The Longhouse meeting Saturday will be the last gen eral session of the tribes for this school year. The event will include games, stunts, hunts, stories, campfire, archery, ri flery and a meal, cooked by the boys. About 60 . boys and their fathers will participate. Chiefs of the tribes are Wayne Stru ble, Oliver Gustafson, Russ Brown, Rod Witham, and Dr. Frank Wilson. Herb Partridge, YMCA youth work secretary, supervises the group.
