Southern Mayor Gets Senate Nomination Baltimore, Md. 0P Balti- more Mayor Thomas R. d'Ale sandro Jr. has won a smash ing victory over three major opponents in the fight for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, the only ma jor contest in Tuesday's Mary land primary. d'Alesandro, tough, squat fighter from Baltimore's "Little Italy" section, said be fore the election in one of his campaign talks that he would "bust his opponents skulls wide open." He just about did. This was the 23rd general or primary election the mayor has won without defeat. He will face incumbent Sen. J. Glenn Beall, a Republican,' in the November general election. The mayor had 83 Demo cratic convention unit votes out of a total of 152 conven tion votes in the state. Con vention votes are the equiva lent of electoral college votes in a national election. Rebel Nearest Rival George Mahoney, a wealthy Baltimore contractor and party rebel, was d'Alesandro's nearest rival with 44 unit votes. d'Alesandro rolled up a popular vote of 94,941 to 76, 383 for Mahoney with 1,062 precincts reporting out of a total of 1,327. Doctor Reports Cardinal Stritch Has 'Good Night' Rome OP) Samuel Cardinal Stritch spent a good night and showed no signs of lung con gestion complicating his re covery from a cerebral stroke, his doctor reported today. An unofficial Roman Catho lic Chuch source had said this morning the 70-year-old cardi nal, arch-bishop of Chicago, was running a high fever and may have contracted pneu monia. But Dr. Ralph Bergen of Chicago said in a medical bul letin at 10:45 a.m.: "The cardinal had a tem perature slightly over 99 de grees last night. This was re garded as insignificant. This morning ' the cardinal was more alert and apparently better. After an examination, it was found that there was no lung congestion." This was the 48th anniver sary of the cardinal's ordina tion as a Catholic priest. Doctors said Tuesday night that Cardinal Stritch, arch bishop of Chicago, had recov ered some ability to talk al though he spoke in short syl lables. The muscle reactions in the right side, which was partially paralyzed by the stroke, were good for his condition, they said. They said his heart and blood pressure also were good. WALZER United Press Financial Editor New York HP) The rate which Americans are booking cut-rate vacations at home and abroad indicates to business men that there's plenty of money to spend if the spend ing public thinks the price is right. It's a buyer's market for North American vacationists this summer, says American Express company. Lower rates also are attracting book ings for foreign countries, in cluding Russia and Japan, ac cording to Alexander Hamil ton Institute. American motels are put ting finishing touches to ex pansion plans with a view of getting a bonanza of business this summer. (IP) A bomb scare touched off by a "juvenile-voiced" telephone caller in Washington, D. C, forced the emergency landing and speedy unloading of a big Capital Airlines Viscount plane with 25 persons aboard here Tuesday. However, the plane with its 21 passengers and crew of four was allowed to continue on its flight from Washington to Atlanta, Ga., Tuesday night after a three-hour search of luggage and the plane itself produced no explosive. The airliner, on a non-stop flight from Washington to At lanta, was ordered to land after Capital Airlines in Washington received a tele phoned warning that "there is a bomb on board one of your aircraft." The call was receiv ed from a "juvenile-voiced" caller. An airline official in Wash ington said the Winston-Salem plane, Flight 173, was the only one actually ordered to land. But, he said, about a dozen other planes were de layed in-' a search for the bomb. The spokesman said Capital had about 40 planes in the air at the time, but decided to search only those "most like ly" to contain a bomb. He said the warning came during the busiest period of the day. oooooooooooooo 0 n Hi famous top quality Bruce Self-Polishing Wax now only 79t a quart , This is the very same Bruce Self Polishing Wax thatsold for $1.09 a qt The only change is the price. Belgium is attracting thous ands of Americans and these are planning side trips to Lon don and Paris, and probably Rome. Alexander Hamilton insti tute points out that an in creasing number of companies are giving their employes va cations abroad. These include General Electric, Hercules Powder, and Republic Avia tion. The airlines both sched uled and non-scheduled look for a big tourist business. Fly ing Tiger anticipates a mil lion dollar business a month in charter flights. Japan Air lines is wooing tourists from the U. S. with jets in prospect for 1961. Canada is spending $1,360, 000 on travel advertising in the U. S. this year, says American . Express, which notes that the promotion is paying off in the form of in quiries at a rate of 6,000 a day pouring into the tourist bureaus. Bermuda Calls Bermuda also is in the mar-, ket for Americans on holiday after 121,000 of them spent $27,000,000 in Burmuda last year. Eastern Air Lines is offer ing package trips, particular ly to Florida. Vacationists to that state get big bargains in swanky hotels. Some trips pro vide choice of 114 hotels and motels with rates from $19 a week, plus air or rail fare. Delta Air Lines has "mil lionaire dream" vacation. Sea-, board Air Line Railroad is bidding for a railroad package deal. In this country in addition to Florida, the dude ranches in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Colorado report reserva tions equal to last year. Also there are package trips to na tional parks, Alaska, Hawaii, West Indies and Mexico, all running ahead of last year. American Express reports its domestic tours up 10 per cent and continuing to in crease. Those who watch business prospects say this vacation stuff is sure proof that the current business setback couldn't possibly be called a depression. n The Family Council Editor'i note: The Family Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist, inree clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women's editor and two writers. I enjoy doing things for Grace. Mrs. L. K. Grace makes a servant of Celia. Celia K. I am a young woman of 23 and am, I think, old enough to be allowed to choose my own friends. My mother doesn't seem to think so. My best friend was married two years ago and now has "a young baby. I am very fond of Grace and her husband and I adore the baby. I spend a lot of time at Grace's house. We never get tired of chattering. I enjoy doing things for Grace and she makes me feel com pletely at home in her house. On week ends Grace's hus band takes us all out driving. My mother has an idea this prevents me from having dates, but of course if I had a date I wouldn't go. In the meantime I have a good time, while otherwise I might sit home and brood. Mrs. L. K. This Grace has made ri absolute slave of my daughter. Celia does things in Grace's home she never did in her own home work that ought to be done by a servant if Grace doesn't want to do it by herself. Celia thinks nothing of baby-sitting for Grace. I say this is work for a teenager. Grace has some nerve using Celia this way. And how does she show her gratitude? She lets Celia do some shopping or other errand for her. If that's friendship I'll eat my hat. Grace will take all she can get from. Celia and give her nothing in return. She is certainly no true friend at all. The Council: Celia must know in her heart a good deal of what her mother says is true. A good friend would not take advantage of the over willingness of another to give her time and services. If Grace had real warmth of feeling and respect for Celia she would insist upon recipro cating in an important way for the small favors done lor her. The Sunday drive does not seem to be much of a re ciprocation. Grace and her husband are probably quite as dependent upon Celia for com panionship as she is on them. We don't intend to suggest a friend should expect return for services she performs out of affection. But we do think things tend to even out in a real friendship. Celia must be aware of these facts and she should ask herself why she persists in clinging to such a relation ship. She says she feels "com pletely at home" in Grace's house and she "might sit home and brood" if she didn't go out with this young couple. Well, that ought to be clue enougji. Celia is using Grace's home and family as a substi tute for one of her own. She feels helpless ;and alone in the world without these friends and, worst of all, she seems to i ...... i ... Kaiser Aluminum To Close Potline Oakland OP) Kaiser Alum inum & Chemical corporation announces it will close down one of the nine potlines at its Chalmette, La., reduction plant May 31. Reason for the shutdown is "to bring primary aluminum production more closely into line with current demand," the company said. The company previously closed down four of the eight potlines at its Mead, Wash., plant, and reduced production at the Tacome plant. The cutback at Chalmette will amount to slightly more than 10 per cent of produc tion, or about 27,500 tons a year. It will mean a layoff for 240 of the plant's 2,400 em ployees.
