HORNBROOK
Troop Takes
By MRS. H. H. CHAPMAN
Hornbrook At the 1958
Scouting Exposition, May 10,
in the Mineral Arts building
at the. Siskiyou County fair
grounds in Yreka, Hornbrook
Troop 38 was top award win
ner with a booth on forestry.
A unique feature of the
booth was a presentation to
300 of the visitors to the dis
play of small potted ever
fretm trees. Each recipient
wM registered by tropp mem
bers in attendance at the
booth. Later, troop membars
plan to call on the recipients
to five advice on the plant
ing and care of the trees.
This feature was judged as
a fina example of Scout in
terest in forest conservation.
In keeping with the theme of
forestry! tree growth rings
wera displayed on a cross
cut of a log on which were
pinned small pennants indi
cating specific growth at dates
coinciding with important
dates in American history.'
Also in the booth was a dis
play of forestry pests show
ing several insects destruc
tive to the economy of the
forests. The booth body itself
comprised a well-designed for
estry scene with a mountain
stream running through a cea
tgal valley. Credit should be
given to the troop as a whole
for its cooperation in all
phases of preparing the booth
and the displays, with special
mention going to Scoutmaster
Harlev Baker. Eagle Scout

Mautz Hits At
Kennedy Talk
Portland IP) Robert
T. Mautz, Oregon Republican
national committeeman, said
Monday it was "unfortunate
that a New England senator
comes onto unfamiliar ground
and makes a speech from in
accurate facts."
In reply to remarks by Sen.
John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) in
a speech at Eugene Sunday
that the Eisenhower admini
stration "has strung" power
development in the Pacific
Northwest.Mautz said:
"With the greatest hydro
electric construction program
in the history of the Pacific
Northwest, or any other re
gion of the United States,. now
underway, th senator was cer
tainly misinformed . . . ."
The Oregon GOP leader ad
ded that the region's power
buildup "in unprecedented
numbers of kilowatts is the
result of construction by fed
eral, public and private bod
ies in a coordinated effort to
do the job. This coordinated
effort is the essence of the
Eisenhower policy."
