MEDF0RDd5i$WrRIBUNE Ashlanders Oppose GP On Tuesday Grants Pat and Ashland High schools will play their Southern Oregon conference doubleheader at Ashland on Tuesday afternoon. Only the first game counts in league standings. If Grants Pass is winner, it will be the conference and District 6 A-l cham pion However, if Ashland wins and Medford defeats Klamath Falls in other ac tion this week, a play-off between Medford and Grants Pass will be requir ed to determine the district 0 representative in state elim inations. Slat quarter-finals open on May 27. Medford and Klamath Falls are to play Friday, ac cording to original schedule but may also move their rivalry ahead. The idea is that, should Medford and Grants Pass wind up lied, there will be lime for the play-off and rest for pitchers before the slate quarter-finals. And that wa the score that won it Sunday for freckled Wiffi Smith. The 21-year-old shotmaker from St. Clair, Mich., put a hot putter to work in the final round for a 72 that carried her past Beverly Hanson of Indio, Calif., and Mickey "Wright of Chula Vista, Calif., in the Peach Blossom-Betsy JUwls event. Miss Hanson closed jout with a 75. Her 54-hole score of 218 was good for second money. Miss Wright posted a 219 to tie Marlene Bauer Hagge of Del Ray Beach, Fla., for third place. PATTY, DROBNY WIN Barcelona, Spain (IP) Vet eran Budge Patty of Los An geles and Paris teamed with Jaroslav Drobny of Egypt Sunday to win the men's dou bles title in the Count of Godo International Tennis tourna ment. They defeated Mervyn Rose and Warren Woodcock of Australia, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Childers Paces Rifle Shooters Tom Childers with 226 out of a possible 250 was winner Saturday in the VFW Rifle and Pistol club's big bore match. Twelve members fired at 200, 300 and 500 yard dis tances at the Camp White range. The Royals swept a double header from second-place Rochester, 5-4 and 6-1, Sun day to open a three and a half game edge over the Red Wings. Tom Lasorda pitched shutout ball over the first eight innings ' in the opener, but Rochester tagged him and two Montreal relievers for four runs before bowing. La sorda now has a 5-1 record. Bob Giallombardo went all the way for the Royals in the seven-inning nightcap, yield ing just four hits. Elsewhere, Miami took two from Columbus, 5-2 and 4-1; Toronto swept Buffalo, 4-2 and 6-3; and Richmond beat Havana, 8-2, in the nightcap after the Cubans won the opener, 2-0. Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Sam Snead Winner in Own Meet White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. (IP) Give a fellow like Sam Snead an inch and he'll take a mile. That's what Gary Player, the personable young South African, did Sunday and it cost him top place in the Sam Snead Golf tourna ment. The first inch Player gave Snead was on the final hole of the 72-hole tournament. It was by that much the 22-year-old professional missed a putt that would have given him first place in the four-day tourney on Snead's home grounds. When Player finished his fourth sub-par round with a four-under 66 it tied him and Snead for first with identical scores of 264, 16 under par. Snead had finished with a 67. The second big inch given Snead by Player was on the fifth hole of a pressurized sudden death playoff. Player missed another five-foot putt by an inch. Snead was there this time to take advantage of it and knocked in one ot three feet for a birdie on the par-four hole and the cham pionship. Bantam Ben Hogan was third with 265. After sharing the lead for three rounds, he carded a 68 Sunday. Moyer Makes Offer To Folley Portland P) Portland matchmaker Tommy Moyer has offered Zora Folley a $15, 000 guarantee or 50 per cent of the gate for a return heavy weight fight with Eddie Ma chen at Portland's Multno mah stadium in July. ' Moyer said he sent a wire Sunday to Folley's manager, Bill Swift at Phoenix, Ariz., suggesting either Jack Demp sey or Nat Fleischer, publish er of Ring magabine, as sole arbitrator. Sid Flaherty, Machen's manager, already has accept ed the offer, Moyer said. Folley and Machen, ranked in a tie as the No. 1 challen gers for Champion Floyd Pat terson's crown, fought to a draw a few weeks ago in San Francisco. Moyer said seating could be arranged in the stadium to accommodate 45,000 fans.
