100 and 220-yard dashes with
times of :10.4 and :24.4.
Top Three Qualify
The top three men and first
three relay teams qualify for
the district meet to be held
here next Saturday in prep
aration for the state A-2 meet.
Phoenix raced nip and tuck
all through the 880 yard re
lay with Henley until the fi
nal 50 yards when Phoenix
barely pulled away to win by
about a foot in the time of
1:40.
The Pirates picked up a
first in the 880 yard run with
Gary Simmonds winning in
2:09.3, another in the 440
yard dash with Charles Swin
dle touring in :53.4, and with
Bill Dillree taking the high
hurdles in :16.2.
Illinois Valley copped two
firsts with Mike Hanby pole
vaulting 11-4V2 and John
Davis claiming the mile in
4:59.3.
Three-Way Tie
Glendale shared a three-
way tie for first in the high
jump with Henley at 5-8. Wes
Young of Glendale tied with
Al Born and Burrell Gober.

McLoughlin Junior High
trackmen wound up a suc
cessful 1958 season Friday by
trimming Grants Pass in all
three divisions of a meet at
Grants Pass.
The ninth grade won 65 13
to 56 23, the eighth, 59 to
53, and the seventh, 57 13
to 19 23.
McLoughlin' s ninth copped
nine of the 14 first places and
swept the shotput.
Mike Hood, Jerry Wine
trout and Bob Rix were dou
ble winners for the Medford
school. Hood broke the Mc
Loughlin record with 20 feet
3 inches in the jump and also
took the high hurdles. He al
so holds the school' high hur
dle and high jump marks.
Winetrout took the shotput
and discus and Bob Rix the
660 and 1320-yard runs. Ray
Meek nabbed the 7.5-yard and

Grants Pass eighth grade
claimed seven first places and
tied for another. Dexter won
the javelin and 150 for Mc
Loughlin and George Clear
water the shot and 75. Smith
claimed the hurdle events for
GP. The Bulldogs swept the

In the seventh grade scrap,
McLoughlin had firsts in all
but two of the nine events.
Comstock won the shot, 75
and 150, and Dalbeck the
hurdles and broad jump for
the Medford crew.

Akins, who will meet Vince
Martinez here for the vacant
world welterweight champ
ionship on June 6, threw a
verbal counter-punch at his
opponent Saturday.
Martinez, from Patterson,
N.J., has freely predicted he
will knock out the St. Louis
negro, but Akins has his own
ideas on the matter.
"I hope he tries to trade
punches," Akins said. "That
would be perfect for me."

Laszlo Tabori, sub-four min
ute miler from Hungary,
switched to the . two-mile
event Saturday and set a new
Pacific Association AAU
record.
Tabori, who ran a 4:04 mile

Coliseum, relays in Los An
geles last night, ran an easy
9:02.7 to crack a 16-year-old
mark of 9:05.2; set by Art Ca
zares of Fresno State in 1942.
Tabori finished 200 yards

Four games on Friday
matched loop rivals and in
each ruckus the loser was
shut out. The Tornado
blanked Ashland 5 to 0 in its
doubleheader which had bear
ing on the standings and also
waltzed off with the kings-x
second engagement 8 to 0.
Klamath Falls captured its
league scrape with Crater 9 to
0 on no-hit tossing by Blake
Griggs and the Comets of Cen
tral Point made a split of it by
grabbing the non-conference
second mix 7 to 0.
Friday results put Medford
just one game behind circuit
pacing Grants Pass. Final con
flicts of the regular loop cam
paign are set for next Friday
with Medford at Klamath
Falls and Grants Pass at Ash
land. Triumphs by Medford
and Ashland in these encoun
ters would knot the Tornado

in the state eliminations.
Heaves Three-Hiiler ,
Grants Pass saw non-league
activity Friday night defeat
ing Glendale 10 to 7.
Dennis Barr limited Ash
land to three hits and Calvin
and Lowell Dean and Ron
Peery provided the bulk of
the hitting power for Medford
Friday in the first game vic
tory over the Grizzlies. Barr
issued no bases on balls and
struck out six batters. Thanks
to errorless fielding, the only
Ashland runnerswho reached
the base paths were those
who hit safely. Grizzlies were
retired in one-two-three order
in five innings.
The two Deans and Peery
each had two hits in three
times up. Calvin drove in
three of the Tornado runs. He
and Dick Durante slapped
doubles and Lowell a triple.
Tom Laurance chucked a
one-hitter for Medford over
the five innings of the second
game although he walked six
batters, including three to fill
