Billy Graham Talks To Convicts In San Quentin By RONALD WAGONER United Press Correspondent San Francisco HP) Evan gelist Billy Graham declared today he was "overwhelmed" at the number of San Quentin prison convicts who made "decisions for Christ" at a sermon he preached there. Four thousand convicts sprawled in the hot sunshine on the baseball field Thurs day to listen to Graham's ser mon. At the end, 623 came forward to "live for God in prison." A spokesman for Graham's team said it was the largest percentage of converts ever to respond at an evangelistic service anywhere. "It takes great courage for men to step out and witness for God in these surround ings," Graham said. Chaplain Gets Cards He turned over their pledge cards to the prison chaplain, who will get in touch with the men to give them further spiritual guidance. Graham spoke from a box ing ring set up on the field. "I'm inviting you all to at tend our crusade meeting to night at the Cow Palace if you can make it," he said. Guffaws of laughter greet ed this invitation. But then the laughter subsided as he went on to say: "Regardless of how black your crimes, God will forgive you. You can live a Christian life here and . now for God will go with you." ,; Visits Death Row After the service, hundreds of inmates crowded around Graham, asking him to sign autographs. After signing about 25 autographs, Graham said: "I can't sign any more. I haven't any more time." "Oh, we've got lots of time," the inmates chorused. "Let some of the fellows who . have autographs copy them for the rest of you," Gra ham said. "That's what we're in here tor, brother Billy," said one eon. Later, Graham visited death row and spoke to 18 of its 21 condemned men. Author-convict Caryl Chess- man remained in his cell. Prison spokesmen said the 18 "greatly appreciated" Gra bam's visit. .. Protestantism Said A Disruptive Force Yosemite, Calif. (W An official of the Congregational church said today that Pro testantism "is one of the principal divisive and disrup tive forces" in the - United States. The Rev. Dr.'Truman B. Douglass, executve vice presi dent of the Board of Home , Missions of the Congregation al Christian Churches, spoke at the annual meeting of the Northern California Congre gational conference. He said America's churches are facing space-age problems with "ox-cart strategies.! Pro testantism's "present system of denominationalism is obso lete,." the New York clergy man said.
