School News... Crater High School By Judi Davis Although she may not ac tually be able to circle the earth once every hour, Miss Sputnik did pay Crater High school a visit May 6. The occasion was the annu al Mother's Tea put on by the Girls' League. Although Miss Sputnik (Terry Turner) may have had trouble getting off the ground in her striking costume, she had no trouble in getting a large round of applause from the audience. The costume was made of silver lame and rhinestone studded plastic, and sported a be jeweled umbrella frame that may have served to send "messages into outer space." Miss Sputnik announced the theme of the show, "Around The World," as she made her way down the runway. All the clothes for the style show! came from Parker Wood's "Leon's," and "Leon's Tots to Teens," as did the costume. Modeling the clothes were Sandra Guss Pat Peffley, Donna Burnett, Sandra Ghe lardi, Julie Ashton, Dianna Cummings, Sharon Thompson and Terry Turner. The girls represented the four classes at Crater. Also adding much interest to the show were the women and children models. They were Mrs. Don Miller, Marcie and Greg; Mrs. Al Setness; Mrs. Ron Lamb and Mrs. War ren Holbrook and Nancy and Ronnie. Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Lamb and Mrs. Holbrook are faculty member's wives. More than 600 people at tended the Tea, at which the commentary was done by Judi Davis. All of the girls in the school were able to partici pate in some way in the show, but those girls heading up committees were Joan Mor riss, Helen Hood, Betty Wil son, Alice Thompson, Joan Dobrot, Myrna Pfnister, and Arvella Prom. ' Entertainment was provid ed by the chorus, Sylvia Yell, Theresa Cline, aad Lea Padgett. Crossing a quaint wooden bridge brought one into a lovely setting of an "Oriental Garden" the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom. Decorat ing the gym for the Prom, the juniors used a pond in the center of the dance floor, anrl cherry - blossom trees all around it. Off to one side was the Pagoda in which Queen Sandra Guss and her court of Kay Askwith, Jocky Camer on, and Sue Blake were seat ed. A grass hut served as the refreshment center, and fans decorated the tables,, while lanterns were suspended from the ceiling. A good crowd of juniors and seniors and their dates at tended, as did a large number of faculty members and hon ored guests. After the Prom, there was a swimming party and an early morning break fast. Radio Station KWIN in Ash land was the scene of an un usual extra-curricular activity for the Speech classes at Cra ter last Saturday. It is the highest mountain in Spain, towering up 11,420 feet, but somehow or other it isn't as impressive looking as the Rock of . Gibraltar. Though that at its , highest point, O'Hara's Tower, is only 1,408 feet, it completely dominates the sea and land surrounding it. Thousands of you who read this have seen Gibraltar while serving with our armed forc es. Many of you have been to this less than two-squaremile British Crown Colony, link ed to the mainland by a sandy isthmus. But only on this, my second visit, did I see the evidence of how gi gantic rock has see-sawed up and down through thousands of years. Some 700 feet up its sides are ledges .that have been scooped out by waves. If all the polar icecaps melted, the ocean wouldn't be 700 feet higher. Consequently, it is known the Rock was once 700 lower than now. Furthermore, higher up and lower down there are oth er evidences of a see-saw ef fect that must have resulted in creating a landbridge across the Straits to Africa. Evidence of the land bridge is found not only in the vege tation and animal, life of southern Spain, much of which must have crossed via land, without the aid of men or birds, but also it is found in the caves .of the Rock. I didn't see any of the fam ous Barbary apes that live on the Rock, but they are still there, and there's no reason why they shouldn't stay in definitely. They can go where man can't which is most of the surface and the Rock is alive with vegetation. Over 400 indigenous varieties of plants and ferns grow there, and many fruit trees have seeded from the garrison's gardens. V (Released by McClure, Newspaper Syndicate) Draft of Suggested Subdivision Bill To Be Presented A draft of a proposed coun ty subdivision ordinance will be presented to the county planning commission at its meeting June 11 for study and discussion, County Plan ning Technician Jack Eaton told the commission Wednes day night. The draft will consist of 14 to 16. pages plus four or five pages of various forms to be used by subdividers. Construction of a proposed dam on Whetstone creek would establish a new lake on city property between Kirtland rd., Pacific highway and Table Rock rd., it was explained. Lakes owned by the state game commission in that area also would be en larged and included in the project. The chain of adja cent lakes on property owned by Charles Hoover and sons also would be used for the recreation project. Eaton ' said the county court was to have written owners of property by the Cameron bridge on the Applegate river regarding its purchase for a recreation site. He said he has not yet received a reply. Ed Strother, planning com mission member, said both he and County Judge Rodney Keating liked a piece of property in the Shady Cove area for a recreation, site. The property faces Indian creek on the north side and High way 62 on the east side, Stro ther said. Water Available The property includes 16 acres, but the owner probably would not sell all of it, Stro ther added. Both water and electricity are obtainable, he said.
