I'll always be a failure. Mrs. G.H. I'm failing in my duty toward him Albert H. I am a 15-year- old boy and have a terrible problem with my schoolwork Last year I just got by in most of my subjects, but I failed in shop and gym. I'm pretty good in English and Spanish, but I can't seem to get science and math, even though I try very hard. As a result, I hate going to school. I know you can't get any where without an education and I don't know what's going to become of me. . My other problem is I can't dance. They gave classes at my school last year, but when I didn't do too well I stopped going. Now everyone goes to dances, and I can't go because I'm ashamed of not knowing how to dance. It looks as though I'll always be a failure and a problem to my mother. V Mrs. G.H. I feel Imust be failing in my duty toward Al because he has so many prob lems and I don't know how to help him. His father desert ed us when Al was 2 years old and I haye to be mother and father both, and sometimes I feel I am not fit for the job. I went to school to talk to Al'i teachers and they say he is a very nice boy and he Isn't doing too badly, only he some times gets very nervous and self-conscious and doesn't pay much attention. They said he'll get through high school if he applies himself. It vorrles me that Al broods so much. I feel he'll never be able to get along in life if he takes everything so hard. People don't like peo ple who aren't happy and self confident. The Council: Perhaps It will help both Al and his mother to realize most teen agers are great worriers even those who appear to be more happy and successful than Al. Adolescence is a period of great trial and competition. It is natural for teen-agers to wonder whether they will measure up to the many chal lenges and responsibilities in life and to compare them selves with others of their age who seem stronger and more competent. Al and his mother magnify his very normal problems. It helps a teen-ager to feel his parents went through these same fears and confu sions, yet came through strong and competent. She should realize he looks to her for strength, and she must show she is unafraid of life and has the utmost con fidence her son will grow into a fine man. The fact that Al's teachers are fairly well satisfied with him and that he is concerned with both his education and his social life indicates Mrs. G.H. is doing a good job. Al's big cqncern seems to be he is not doing well in more masculine subjects gym and shop. It is possible he greatly misses the male element in his home life. Mrs., G.H. bring him into closer contact with an older cousin jox an uncle who might take an in terest in him. He should also join the Scouts or a boy's club and be encouraged to partic ipate in sports, . even if he doesn't do too well. Eventu ally he is bound to find one at which he can achieve fair success.
