Damage appeared to be confined to a small area. "The fact that it was north of the city indicates it was lo cally produced, not an over flow from Los Angeles," the scientists said. Smog damage to crops in other central California coun ties was generally less than found in a similae study made last year. Damage to .beans, peas, tomatoes and petunias was found at Lathrop, Anti Och and Palo Alto. Damage was particularly heavy near San Leandro. The Medical Recently, I told of the great work of Professor Wendell Johnson, of the University of Iowa, in helping persons with speech defects. It wan inter ested in read ing also some of the papers written by Professor B r yngelson, who is direc tor of Minne ota Speech Clinic in Min neapolis. H e ut. Alvarez emphasizes a point which I think must be important, and this is . that there is a "stuttering person ality." He says school teach ers are constantly complain ing that some of their stutter ers are unable to concentrate, or they lack decision, or their reactions are slow, or they play truant, or refuse to ap pear before the class, or are seclusive, or very nervous. Some of these difficulties the child was probably born with, and others were forced on him by the mental distress he has had to endure every day. As Dr. Bryngelson says, "From the testimony of hun dreds of adult persons who have stuttered from child hood, one learns that the thought 'I'm a stutterer' is the prevailing and ever-present thought in their minds;" The doctor thinks that one of the most helpful things one can do for the poor fellow is to get. him to see that in spite of his stuttering, he can become a useful and honored and well liked member of the commu nity. He does not have to have an inferority complex. Many men, in spite of their stuttering, have become very successful in business. Mere Self-Conscioui Dr. Bryngelson says that one of the worts things par ents can do for a stuttering child is to keep saying, "You can break the habit if you try." "Slow up your thoughts, and you won't need to talk so clumsily; use your will power"; and "it is all in your mind." Dr. Bryngelson says that this sort of exhortation makes the child even more self-conscious and unhappy. A point I have often noted is that mothers of stuttering children have told me that their stuttering child was much more clumsy than his brothers and sisters. Professor Bryngelson has stutterers spend hours speak ing before a mirror, learning to employ a natural voice and to speak with a proper rafe and rhythm; also to quit grim acing or trying to use their hands and ether parts of the body to assist in talking. Some teachers advise that the patient try imitating a stut terer. Every stutterer is help ed to get over his fear of stut tering, so that then he will go out among people and talk. In one of his studies, Profes sor Bryngelson showed that among 78 normal speakers there were only 6 per cent who knew of stutterers .. in their family, whereas among 78 stutterers there were 54 per cent who had stuttering relatives. In another study of heredity, it was found that in families of 152 stutterers the incidence of stutterers was four times that in the 1 na tion as a whole. Shifting of Handedness Among the '78 normal speakers, there was only one who had to shift from using his left hand to his right, whereas among the 78 stutter ers, 58 per cent had had to make this change. In another group of 1421 stutterers stud ied, there was shifting of handedness in 73 per cent. In 53 per cent of stuttering cases the person could use both hands equally well. When these facts were included with the hand edness, it was found that only 19 per cent of the stutterers were strictly one-sided while 51 per cent of the non-stutterers were one-sided in the three correlated functions. Very interesting is the ob servation among the stutter ers there were 50 per cent more who wet. the bed late than there were in the nor mal groups. To me, this sug gests, again, that the stutterer often has poor control of the muscles and nerves of ,his body. Old Mayan Temple Found in Mexico Berkeley, Calif. (W .A Mayan temple estimated at 600 to 800 years old has been discovered in the wilds of southern Mexico. Two University of Califor nia (Berkeley) paleontology students, Hugh Hildebrant and Jim Bo "ishbaugh, stum bled on the ruins while look ing for fossils in the southern most Mexican states of Chia pas and Oaxaca. . The temple, in the state of Chiapas, was built during the classical Mayan period. Other than the temple, the paleontologists found fossils from the pleistocene period that range from one to three million years old. Among the finds were fos sils of mammoths, sloths, horses and glypotodonts. The glypotodonts were large armor-plated mammals, weigh ing several tons which looked like gigantic armadillos.
