tJH UktL TRIBUNE, MedforJ. Oregon, TTiurxhy. My 15, 1958 Qugg: No Pickle Week in Oklahoma Bt don quigc limited Press Correspondent New York OF! The gover nor of the great state of Ok lahoma has wound up and $ruck what I would call a sal gasser of a blow for free- alom. What he is trying to free Is the calendar. He claims it is bowed by the weight of use less special days, weeks and nonths. To that end, his last week ly newsletter began forth rightly: "There will be no pickle' reek in Oklahoma this year. I feel we can somehow man age to struggle along with out it. In fact, I doubt if any Two Plead Guilty In Circuit Court Richard D. Tilley, 22, and Charles John Dahm, 18, both of Jacksonville, pleaded guil ty in circuit court this week to charges of burglary not in a dwelling. They both waived right to a grand jury hearing and an attorney. . The two men are charged with the theft of small tools valued at $750 to $1,000 from the Hydraulic Service store in Medford recently. Sheriffs officers said the two men also admitted to tak ing tools, gasoline and oil ear lier from a tractor on the Old Stage rd. and tools and batter ies from a mobile repair shop on the Old Stage rd., owned by Ousley Construction com pany, Eugene. Officers said tools were found in the home and car of Tilley. Salem (IF) The State Su preme Court has permanently disbarred George C. Reinmil ler, Portland attorney, as rec ommended by the board of governors of the Oregon State Br. Japan this year produced 191,212,800 pounds of cocoon silk, 4.4 per cent more than 1955's record high. one except a Chicago public relations firm will be even mildly disappointed." No Proclamations The governor's name is Raymond Gary. He has noth ing against pickles, as such, so long as they keep out of proc lamations he has to sign. Last year, he says, he issued 270 proclamations. Looking back on it, he can't find any rea son for such as "Clown Week" and "Golf Day." Matter of fact, he says, the whole publicity-stunt business is in a sad state of decline. He recalls fondly the imagi native days when pancakes were publicized by frying them on the sidewalk on a hot July day. That got a picture In the paper and helped liven a dull day. "Now," he laments, "They ask for a high-sounding proc lamation instead. Even the lowly pickle seeks to shroud itself in dignified whereases, and tie in with public welfare by urging additional outdoor recreation facilities. This seems a bit ridiculous to me. "Pickles have their place, of course. But there is little formality or dignity about a pickle, with or without warts." The governor recalled a roundtrip plane pilgrimage from Washington, DC, to Ok lahoma City by a man on a lone mission to get a proc lamation "extolling the vir tues of salmon." The gover nor said a high-level confer ence had decided a flood of proclamations would help sal mon sales. He told the sal mon missionary Oklahoma had beef to sell. All right, no pickle week for the Sooners. But I find, on looking at the U.S. Cham ber of Commerce listing, that Pickle Week follows hard on the cottontail of "National Domestic Rabbit Week" this month. If the governor is go ing to be fair, he'll have to snub rabbits, too. THE DANMOORE HOTEL 1217 SW Morrison St. PORTLAND, OREGON All transient guests. All those who come, return.
