OP) An drews Methodist church where the first Mothers Day ceremony was held 50 years ago was filled to over flowing Sunday for an anni versary service. The church, now 83 years old, was the scene of the or iginal Mother's Day May 10, 1908. The first observance was suggested by Anna Jar- vis, one-ume oration resi dent. . The Rev. Virgil Gillum, pastor of Andrews, delivered the golden anniversary ser- mon "Pilgrim Mothers." Cor sages yere presented to the oldest and youngest mothers present. Eev. Gillum "the heritage of God-fearing mothers is apt ly portrayed in Biblical his tory. The close relationship between these mothers and their family has become a modern legend." The minister cited the case tf a mother who took time out for daily prayer despite the work and care of her 19 children. ' "Seventeen of these chil flren we know not much about," he said. "But the oth er two have their names writ ten around the world where ever Methodism attempts to extend God's kingdom. They were John and Charles Wes ley." Kidnaped Boy Returned Home Middlesex, N.J. (W Five-year-old Michael Sickle III, abducted three weeks ago by relatives and taken to Flor ida, was home again today, busy playing with a new toy truck and a collie dog. Young Mickey told his fa ther and stepmother on ar rival, "I missed you and love you a whole bunch. The boy was driven here by his parents from Idlewild Airport in New York City, where he arrived by plane from Miami, Fla. The reunion was made pos sible by the ruling of a Flori da juvenile judge that the boy must be returned to his father, Michael Sickle II, op erator of a dry-cleaning bus iness and part-time schoolbus driver. The elder Sickle said ha in tended to press kidnaping charges against the boy's ma ternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lewis Dodd, of Miami, and another relative. The three were arrested May 2 by authorities in Florida. Majority of Air Crashes Near Ports Washington (IP) A spec ial Civil Aeronautics adminis tration survey of air collis ions from 1949 through 1954 reports the majority took place within five miles of an airport, at altitudes of 3,000 feet or less. The survey showed that 66 per cent occured at altitudes of 1,000 feet or below. The CAA also reported that 41 per cent of the collisions in ' solved one .plane overtaking enother. The study, based on 92 col lision investigations in the eix-year period, noted that jtfjor cockpit visibility appear- to be a major cause. vangelisf, Once In Prison, Dies . Oakland OB C. (For Cash) Thomas Patten, flam boyant evangelist once con victed of stealing $14,750 irom feis church, died Sunday of a afteart ailment. Word of his death came from aides of his wife, Dr. ebp Patten. They said he died in a hospital near San Diego, where he had been a heart patient for the past week. Patten was convicted in 1950 of grand theft and sen tenced to serve from five to 50 years. He fought unsuccess fully to avoid going to prison, claiming he was the victim of a" chronic heart condition. . He was released in 1953. A U.
