The print is a rather freak ish one that was put out to sell as a novelty about the time of the Civil War or a little later. It is undated. The entire piece, about 10 by 15 inches, is mounted in a special frame so constructed that the other two generals can be seen only by looking from a special angle. The picture of Washington is in the center. On the right is one of General Scott of Mexican War fame. General McClellan, for whom the sad dle is named, is on the left. The visual effect with the Scott and McClellan pictures was obtained by pasting them back to back, then dividing them in equal lengths and mounting them at right angles to the Washington picture. ANY FRANCES PARKMAN FIRST EDITIONS WORTH COLLECTING f Any of the books of Francis Parkman, the professor of horticulture who became a great historian, are worth col lecting in their first editions, but one of the more valuable of his books is his first. It is "The California and Oregon Trail," first published in New York in 1849. The book is not one of the series that made him famous as a historian. Those deal with the struggle between England and France for control of North America. Instead, it is a rec ord of his experiences and travels in the West, under taken while still a young man. So far as I know, there is no way of telling whether the two-volume issue of the 1849 work came out ahead of that published in a single vol ume and bearing the same date. I have seen only the single volume issue. It is bound in cloth the one I saw was in blue cloth and it should have five pages of advertising in it, four in the , back and one in the front, before the frontispiece. The two-volume issue is sup posed to have appeared in printed wrappers instead of a cloth binding. The other, dated 1876, was entitled "Washington's Fare well to the Officers of his Army at the Old Tavern, cor ner of Broad & Pearl sts. Dec. 4, 1783." It differed from other issues of the picture the firm put out by what it stow ed of the rising influence of the Prohibition Movement in America. In earlier isses.'.a wine glass and decanter were in the print. In this one they had been edited out. Nonetheless, aside from that the picture of Washing ton's farewell to his officers was vastly more interesting than the novelty item men tioned above. Not so to collectors, how ever. The picture of the three generals in the trick frame went for $180, which is not more than $40 or $50 higher than it usually brings. The one of Washington's farewell brought $40, about half as much as it ought to have sold for. number of coin collectors is cloth, if you find one of that date but with a leather bind ing, don't be disappointed. If it has all the pages, including those with the advertise ments, it may well prove to be more valuable. If, for example, the leather binding is of fine morocco leather and hand tooled with gold, it may be worth an ex tra $20 to $100 just because of the binding alone. There is still a good deal of special binding done, but , in the latter 1800s particularly, booklovers often went in for such fine work. The last copy of this fa mous work 'I saw sold had been rebound in plan leather. Otherwise, it was as issued. It was marked $60 and that is what it sold at, even though the book has several times sold as low as $30 at auctions during the past few years. Part of the reason why it brought the $60 price is that there is a continuing and in creasing interest in books about the early West that were published as contempor ary accounts. From all indi cations, that interest will con tinue, drawing with it an in crease in the prices of west ern Americana. Most Teen-Agers Favor Curfew Chicago Iff) A Chicago Youth Commission poll of 500 teenagers showed 83 per cent favored the curfew here be cause it protected them after dark. Most of those polled said the 10:30 p.m. weekday cur few did not cut into their leisure time activities, accord ing to the commission. The week end curfew is 11:30 p.m. Those who opposed the cur few said troublemakers would be out anyway. Neighborhood 'groups were a stronger influence than fam ilies on more than half of the polled teenagers. But more than two-thirds said adults and parents should get to gether with teenagers to help solve present problems. However, the same number of boys and girls said adults generally exaggerate youth problems. In answer to the question of what they expected from adults, most of those polled said adults should first show concern and respect for others. They also said they expect adults to practice what they preach. , Present public and private agencies are failing to fulfill the needs of youth, according to two-thirds of the young people.- Most resented by the youths are employment limitations based on age, curfew regula tions on older youths, restric tions on' teenage driving and necessity of paying adults ad mission and transportation fares.
