Brooks Hays (ID- Ark.) that "the Russians hav freedom of worship but they don't have freedom of religion." Hays is president of the Southern Baptist convention 3 He and the Rev. Claren W Cramford, president of the t American Baptist convention, . flew to Moscow last month for a good-will visit with Rus- sian Baptists. They reported their im j pressions in separate inter views in Washington this week. Hays will give a formal report to the Southern Bap- tist convention, which meets in Houston, May 20-23. I They found, as. have other visitors to the Soviet Union. that worship service in Rus- Ssian churches are heavily at tended. At an early Sunday service at. Moscow's First rBaptist church,, for example, ; exery one of then 1,400 seats J was filled long before the opening hymn, and more than ' 600 worshippers stood throughout the two-hour serv- ;ice. Aware Of Restrictions . But as Baptists who attach great importance to evangel ; ism, Hays and Cranford were J acutely conscious of the re- strictions which the, Soviet Communist government has placed on church activities. ! "The reason I say that the I Russians do not have free- '.dom of religion," Hays ex- planed, "is that they are not free to propagate the faith. ;The churches cannot operate J Sunday schools . or conduct Zany kind of educational pro ! grams. They are not permit j ted to acquire property to open new churches." . 2 Only the government can ; carry on "educational func :tions" in Russia. And in state f operated schools, Russian children are taught that re ligion is an "outworn super Jstition." They are told that the Soviet government toler ; ates religious worship because :it nJakes the old folks feel good. But that young people are expected to take a "scien : tific" i.e., atheistic view of .the universe. - Soviet Communist leaders . believe that this strategy will be more effective in the long run than open persecution of the churches, and that it will virtually eliminate religion from Russia within one or two more generations. Is it working? Mostly Middle Aged Hays and Cranford saw some, evidence -vthat it' is. Pitts, Neil Stone, and Leonard A. McCullough. , Last week end a group of 44 girls of the Girls . Friendly Socie'ty of St. George's church, Roseburg, visited Black Oaks, conference cen ter of the Diocese of the Epis copal church in Oregon. Five advisors' accompanied the girls for the week end visit which was their third annual trip here. Presbyferian Youth To Hold Work Days The Westminster fellow ship group of high school young people of the First Presbyterian church will hold a "work day" tomorrow, May 10,Vand also the following Saturday, May 17. The young people are available for jobs such as gardening car . wash ing, -window washing, and baby sitting. A number of the young people will also -work after school during the week. The purpose of the "work days" is to help send two of the i young people from the group on a tour of Presby terian Mission stations on the Pacific coast and southwest this summer. The two, Susie Moore and Carol Slater,' will be part of a delegation from the whole state of Oregon. Any people who -would like to provide jobs for the young people may call the church office, SPring 2-2830, and give their name and address. Children Honor Christian Home Children of the church school will meet with the adults at both services at the Congregational church- Sun day in honor of the "Festival ol the Christian Home."
