(International) Surgeon Says Indian Bill Means Disaster By SID HOLLINGSWORTH Camp White A major dis aster threatens this state if the liquidation of the Klamath Indian reservation goes into effect in August without dras tic modification, Dr. G. H. Ad ler, government surgeon at the reservation for 14 years, believes. Dr. Adler, in an interview, outlined the need for an ade quate law which will protect not only the Indians but the entire lumber industry from further market depression. Dr. Adlejr has been living at Camp White since he left the reservation in 1957. He is familiar with every aspect of the Indian problem and regards the action contem plated in the beginning as ill advised and calculated to re sult in disaster both to Klam ath county and the Indians themselves. B Deprived "They would be deprived of such benefits -as medical and hospital attention and the sustained yield from the systematic sale of their tim ber rights. The money they receive from quick sale of these rights will be spent and 4he Indians will be wards of the state in no time," Dr. Ad ler stressed. There are 2,500 Indians on the reservation now and the timber, which is one of the last remaining stands of vir gin pine, is valued at more than $100,000,000, he empha sized. The present plan was pre sented to congress in 1954 when the bill was introduced to grant the Indians local au tonomy in liquidating their claims, he said. Indians Divided "There is a division among the Indians themselves over the program offered original ly in Washington. Many of them feel that the plan was hastily presented and that it should extend for 25 years or more under the sustained yield principle. "This would conserve the timber stand and protect the On Show Program A special feature of this year's Medford Home Show will be the "Parade of Homes," a preview public showing of homes now being built in the Medford ana Rogue valley area. Other homes still will be in various stages of building progress, showing some of the newer building techniques used. Lists of the homes show ing will be distributed at the Home Show, and directional signs will be placed along the way to aid viewers in locat ing them. "I am convinced from long experience among the Indians living on the reservation that they are not ready at this stage to handle their own af fairs. They are immature and incapable of negotiating sale of their rights piecemeal," he declared.
