Louisiana Flood
Threat Continues
Alexandria, La. IP A
massive flood-fighting opera
tion shifted into high gear to
day, strengthening levees to
meet a near-bankful crest
along the zig-zagging Red
river in Louisiana.
A revised flood bulletin was
issued for the Red after no
significant rainfall was report
ed in waterlogged northern
Louisiana for the past two
days. The Red is expected to
crest at Shreveport May 8 at
32.6 feet. Flood stage is 30
feet.
About 400 Air Force per
sonnel from Barksdale Air
Force Base were ordered to
reinforce flood fighters on
levees between Alexandria
and Shreveport Monday night,
when levees weakened by
floods last year were again
threatened.
Approximately 100 men
equipped with bulldozers and
other earth-moving machin
ery began repairing levees at
East Point, a small communi
ty on the Red between Shreve
port and Alexandria.
