No. End of School Gold Hill, City Hall Council Room Rogue River, High Gym North Entrance Training School Scheduled in City A chicken barbecue train ing school for representatives from any organization or group in the area will be held in Medford Friday., May 23, from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. The program will include approximately three hours of instruction with the balance of the period devoted to the actual barbecue by trainees. Lunch will be the chicken barbecue. All trainees will be train ed in the fundamentals of bar becuing chickens on large commercial-type barbecue pit units owned by the Oregon Broiler Growers association as well as on small backyard barbecue pits. Charles M. Fischer, poultry marketing specialist at Ore gon State college, Corvallis, will be instructor. The event will be held at Bigham hall at the county fairgrounds. Contact Office Organizations interested in sending representatives to the school should contact the extension office in the county courthouse prior to May 15. The names and address of representatives will be need ed by the office. A minimum registration of 25 is necessary to hold the school and a registration fee will be charged to cover the cost of the dinner plus a man ual. British Railway Men Plan Strike London flPt Britain's 350,000 railwaymen mapped plans today for a nationwide strike that could tie up the whole United Kingdom as a bus strike has crippled Lon don. Today was the day of de cision for the trainmen and the Laborite Daily Herald predicted the railwaymen would strike by May 18. The strike would affect almost everyone in Britain, for most travel is done by rail. A walkout by 50,000 bus men snarled traffic in Lon don's suburbs with five-mile-long lines of cars standing mo tionless. The "rush hour" stretched out to four and five hours with commuters suffer ing the most. The bus drivers and con ductors most of them wom en struck for higher wages. They receive an average of S22.40 a week and asked for raises up to SI. 47 a week. They rejected a government offer of SI. 19. WELL-CONCEALED AGE Chicago IIP The 1918 University of Chicago High school class will hold a re union May 16. It will be the 40th anniversary for the men but "only the 25th" for the women, who might stay away rather than admit they grad uated 40 years ago. By FRED DANZIG United Press Correspondent New York API Air pol lution, one of modern soci ety's self-inflicted wounds, has most of our population living dangerously. Scientists have only recent ly become concerned about air pollution's effects on our present and future health. One way or another, we all meet up with air pollution. We may encounter it in heavy traffic, in a crude apartment house incinerator, near an area where garbage, scrap and industrial wastes are burned in the open, around metal smelting, oil refining or chemical plants, near lumber camps or paper mills. Some times it can be caused by a neighbor burning leaves, or by a dirt road. It can come in the form of dust, odors, fumes, gas, mist, smoke, vapors any contam inant that gets into the air and harms people, plants, an imals and property. The newest aspect of this problem is radioactivity stem ming from nuclear testing or industrial uses of atomic en ergy, but this report is con cerned only with "civilian," or everyday air pollution, its effects and what is being done to control it. Authorities estimate that 10,000 American communties have air pollution problems and 7,500 of this number have fewer than 25,000 residents. So it's not just a big city prob lem. More and more, air pollu tion is being tagged a villian as scientists learn more about it. Doctors, for example, now recognize a "smog complex" irritation of the eyes, the no.se or throat; chest pains, cough ing, shortness of breath, nau sea, headaches. Air pollution apparently has 6ther effects on health, too. A pioneer in air pollution research, Dr. Paul Kotin of the University of Southern California, believes air pollu tion and not cigaret smoking to be the key factor behind increase in lung cancer. "In dustrialization has brought new substances such as oxi dizing .compounds in smog which cut down the lungs' defense against cancer pro ducing agents,"' said Dr. Ko tin. The American Cancer So ciety has reported that "the lung cancer rate is lower in rural ai-cas than in urban areas. This is one of the rea sons why air pollution is sus pected as being a factor. . ." Dr. Clarence A. Mills, pro fessor of experimental medi cine at the University of Cin cinnati, created a sensation in Los Angeles a few years ago when he reported that smog caused about 800 "ex cess deaths" over a three-year period. Pol lutants can ruin rubber, dam age plants, corrode metals, cut worker efficiency and hinder a city's economic growth. Industry and government combined spend about 100 million dollars a year on proj ects and research to clean our air. The goal is not absolute air purity, an impossibility in a modern industrial society. But scientists are aiming for a level of air quality where no health hazards, economic losses or nuisances are pres ent. In short, we no longer can afford to tolerate dirty air. McElroy to day weighed a union request that he intercede with four of the nation's biggest missile and aircraft producers to head off a threatened strike. Labor sources said Machin ist President Al J. Hayes and United Auto Workers Chief Walter P. Reuther asked Mc Elroy to put pressure on the firms to sweeten their waee offers before contracts expire at midnight Wednesday.
