ILLINOIS VALLEY To Attend Boys State By HELEN BOTTEL Cave Junction Noel Turner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Turner, and Leland Rosenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Rosenberg, all of Cave Junction, have been chosen as Illinois Valley High school delegates to Boys State at Salem, June 15-22. Young Rosenberg, a sopho more, was named to replace Norma Sowell who will be unable to attend because of his work with the Forest Service this summer. Leland will be sponsored by the Illinois Valley Lions club. Noel Turner's trip to Salem will be sponsored by Glenn Morrison Post No. 70 of the American Legion. The organizational meeting for the new Illinois Valley Current Events club has been postponed from May 6 until Tuesday, May 13, because of conflicting schedules at the high school. The public is invited to the meeting, which will feature a discussion on education. It is to start at 3 p.m. in the high school library, with Leslie Adkins as moderator. Refreshments are planned. Betty Jolly is to be the hostess for the May 7 meet ing of the Illinois Valley Civic Women's League. Mem bers will meet at the Jolly home in Cave Junction at 8 p.m. Attending the summation meeting of the Great De cisions group Tuesday night in Grants Pass were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Floyd, Mrs. Don Orton, Mrs. Reuben Cook and llrs. Abner Castleberry. Mr. and Mrs. Luther Sheri er will spend this weekend at Chiloquin, Ore., visiting their son and family, the Luther Sheriers Jr. Luther Jr. is manager "of the Chiloquin Cleaners. Work on new cables and poles in Cave Junction has been started by the Redwoods Telephone company. When completed, all 15 telephone poles along Redwoods avenue (Main street) will have been removed, and no wires will cross the street. Garluand Engleton, of Gar land Construction company, Eugene, has been hired by Redwoods Telephone com pany manager Don Gibbs to help with cables and cable splicing. The Eugene com pany specializes in communi s cations construction. As most of the cables will be strung from COPCO poles to the west of Main street, only two new telephone poles will be required, Gibbs said. Don Brown .pastor of Sel ma Baptist church, and an in structor at Illinois Valley High school, will be the speaker at the high school baccalaureate services Sun day, May 25, at 8 p.m. at the school. Graduation ceremonies will be held outdoors on the high school field, if weather per mits, according to principal Vernon Larson. The services are scheduled for Thursday, May 29, at 8 p.m. with Dr. Henry Ten Pas, director of the school of Agricultural Education, Oregon State col lege, as speaker. Arle Z. Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Scott of Kerby, and a third year phar macy major at Oregon State college, has received the high est scholastic honor possible for pharmacy or scientific re search students. Miss Scott was recently named a member of Rho Chi, a national honor society for men and women students majoring in pharmaceutical or scientific college work. A clean-up day at the old Pioneer cemetery near Waldo was held Wednesday by mem bers of the Laurel cemetery board of directors and their friends. The ancient cemetery, where a number of early-day pioneers are buried, has re ceived only sporatic care in recent years. It is no longer used as a burial ground, but is one of the most historic spots of the valley. An old iron fence at the front of the cemetery was painted black, and the wood en fence given a white coat of paint. General clean - up work was done around the graves, reports Mrs. J. J. Vil lair, clerk of the Cemetery board. Larry Maurer, who leads the Southern Oregon college batting average, and is an out standing all-around athlete at SOC, has been hired as direc tor of the Illinois Valley sum mer recreation program. An nouncement was made this week, fololwing a meeting of Recreation, Inc. board of di rectors Monday at Illinois Valley High school. At a regular council meet ing Monday night, Cave Junction city council mem bers discussed the possibility of buying the building in which the city offices are now located. Laurence Cushing, city at torney, who heads the build ing site committee, was di rected to contact C. Y. Arnold, owner of the building, to ne gotiate for its purchase. It was pointed out that money is now available to complete the transaction, and that city ownership of the building would not only result in sav ings of rent, but also bring in revenue from rental of an ad joining office. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Floyd of Holland attended the Elks Club birthday party in Grants Pass Saturday night, where Floyd was honored as one of the birthdayites. He is a charter, member of the organization. Scott Turner of Cave Junc tion and Duane Nealy of Grants Pass returned this week from a business trip to Bakersfield, Calif. Top ranking juniors at Illi nois Valley High school took the National Merit Scholar ship examination Tuesday. Winners at state and national levels will receive college scholarships offered to out standing students by indus trial organizations. Mrs. Walt Colpitts and Mrs. Richard Rians spent Tuesday in Grants Pass where they received instruction on sewr ing of draperies at a county wide Home Extension Unit class. The two will give the lesson for the next Valley HEU meeting. May 13. Wafer Developer Of Klamath Basin Dies Saturday Malin (IP) . William Car son Dalton, 84, a resident of the Klamath basin for 58 years, died in a Klamath Falls hospital Saturday. He had been in failing health. Dalton was born in Tennes see and came to Klamath coun try to accept the foremanship of 30,000 acres of land and cattle holdings of the Jesse D. Carr Land and Livestock company. Later he acquired most of the holdings in his own hands and incorporated them as the Klamath Land and Livestock company in 1920. He was one of the first proponents of irri gation in this part of southern Oregon. He had served as president of the former American Na tional Bank of Klamath Falls and was at one time a member of the California State High way commission. He was active in both state and national cattlemen's asso ciations. Survivors include the wi dow, one son and one daugh ter, all of Malin, as well as three brothers and three sisters. Complaints Curb Lloyd Center Work Portland (IF Work on Oregon's biggest mercantile project, the mammoth Lloyd Center in Portland was slow ed somewhat Friday when the city was forced by neigh borhood complaints to restrict the working hours of con struction crews. R. H. Heintz Construction Company was directed to turn off its earth-moving machines by 10 p.m. instead of at mid night because of complaints about the noise. And the ma chines will not be warmed up intil 6:30 a.m. instead of the 5:30 a.m. starting time now observed. ViVsiting Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Smith at Kerby over the weekend were their grand sons, Arthur and Walter Smith, who are students at Milo Academy. They are sons of Dr. Kenneth Smith of Lu cerne Valley, Calif. Mrs. Harry O. Smith was an honored guest, together with other past state presi dents, at the District Feder ated Garden club meeting Wednesday at Rogue River. In addition to appearing in a panel discussion group on primroses, Mrs. Smith gave a brief talk on State Garden club projects carried through during her term in office. Newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cooke of Kerby had the book thrown at them last week, when the Cave Junc tion chief of police issued a ticket to Cooke for driving an unlicensed vehicle with no headlights, no tail lights, no brakes, no windshield wipers : in fact practically nothing. Cooke beat the rap when he proved he was driving under duress. He had been commandeered by friends to conduct his bride, the former Sharon Ellis, by wheelbarrow, from one end of Cave Junc tion to the other.
