JOHN PHILIPS Visiling Evangelist "Revival Campaign Starts at Full Gospel The Rev. and Mrs. John Philips, Bell Gardens, Calif., will conduct a revival cam paign at the Full Gospel Tab ernacle, 609 Western ave., starting Sunday. The meetings will be held nightly except Saturday at 7:45 p.m. Mr. Philips will be the visiting evangelist for the re vival and wil also play the guitar. Mrs. Philips plays the accordion. Accompanying the Philips to Medford will be their small son, Edward. The public is invited to attend. At the beginning of Na tional Family Week, the pas tor, the Rev. Richard M. Jones, will speak on marriage and the home and will con clude the sermon by repeat ing the marriage vows and asking husband and wife to renew those vows. The theme of the pastor's sermon will be 'One Plus One Equals One." The chancel choir, under the direction of Mrs. Richard M. Jones, will sing "Lord, for Thy Tender Mercies Sake." The Lord's supper will be observed and nursery care is provided. . Sunday is Family night at the church, with the evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a potluck supper. Following the supper there will be games for all the family, songs, and the showing of the film "The First Step." . Sunday, May 18, dedication services will be held at the new church building at 4:30 p.m. GOSPEL MINISTRY ' "The Call to - the Gospel : Ministry" will be the sermon Sunday at 11 a.m. at Zion ; Lutheran church, Fourth st. and Oakdale ave. A layman in "the church will speak. the idea Jesus was a sissy, Graham told a capacity crowd of 16,500 in the Cow Palace. "He was once a teen-ager him self. He enters into your joys and sorrows. "He could have been a star on any team." Thursday night was teen age night, the fifth meeting of Graham's six-week crusade to save San Francisco. More than a quarter of his audience was youngsters. After his sermon, 98 per sons, many of them teenagers, carne forward to make a de cision for Christ." Up to then, the average had been 350 to 400 decisions a meeting. Largest Group of Converts "This is the largest group I've ever seen come forward in any crusade during tne first week," Graham said. Graham sprinkled his ser mon with "jive" talk, provok ing shrill giggles now and then from some of the girls. He took as his text the 17th verse of the 10th chapter of Mark, . in 'which a hetlthy young man asked Jesus: "What shall I do $hat I may inherit eternal life." "Take up the cross and fol low me," was Jesus's answer. "This young man had every thing on the ball," Graham said. "He could drive down the street in a yellow con vertible. But there 'was an emptiness, a restlessness in his soul. Many of you are like that." A Time of Trial Graham noted that adoles cence is a time of trial. "It is a transitional period, and by far the most difficult of life a time in which disc jockeys are youth's philoso phers." But he said youth is search ing for a leader, for authority. "I believe that something they are seeking is Jesus Christ. I believe he is their authority." Graham said besides youth's search for authority, youth is "troubled with sex" and thinks it is misunderstood. Graham also rapped the teachings of John Dewey, the celebrated educational philos opher for what he said was Dewey's "do as you please idea." "As a result, a generation ago we threw God and moral ity from education," he said. "We sowed the wind and now we are reaping the whirl wind." Travelers Service. Set by Methodists Fishermen and travelers are invited to worship "as you arc", according to Dr. George G. Roseberry. min ister of the First Methodist church, at an 8 a.m. service which will start Sunday and will continue through August 24, each Sunday. The service will be con ducted in the Meeker Me morial Chapel, with en trance on Mistletoe st. The service will include Holy Communion this Sun day and a brief meditation. The service will last 30 minutes each week. The public is invited. First Methodists Announce Services Otis Swisher will be the soloist at both the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services of worship at the First Methodist church, Medford, Sunday. He will sing "Save Me, O God". Dr. George G. Roseberry's sermon for both services will be "Great Words." The Com munion meditation for the 8 to 8:30 a.m. service will be, "Holy Hours." The Rev. George A. Tro bough will be in the pulpit at the Newman Methodist church, Grants Pass, at both services. The Rev. G. Wesley Turner, pastor, is ill and will be out of the pulpit for sev eral weeks. The sermon will be, "Economy Religion." Parent Teacher Night Planned by Church Parent - Teacher night will be observed Tuesday at the Eastwood Baptist church, North Keene Way dr. at Ridgeway. The get -together begins at 7:30 p.m. and is being planned by Miss Vir ginia Floyd. Invitations have been sent to parents of chil dren in the church school. Each teacher will explain her methods, curriculum and goals in teaching her class and how her class relates to others in the graded approach. Slides will be shown of the various classes of the church school and comparisons made in growth over the recent years. Friends Start Sermon Series Pastor Clynton Crisman will begin a series of mes sages from the book of Ephe sians at the Friends church Sunday morning in the two worship services at 9:45 and 11 a.m. There will.be a duet, "God Is Love," by Mrs. Har old Allen and Mrs. Raymond Brood. Ephesians will be introduc ed as the book-of-the-month for May during the Sunday school hours at 9:45 and 11 a.m. The entire Sunday school is to read this book of the Bible during the month Another feature of the Sun day school opening assem blies will be a missionary offering for Bill Baum, re cently returned from a term of service in Japan. Gospel Team Set At Trail Community Trail A gospel team for the Prairie Bible Institute, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, will be at the Trail Commu nity church Friday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Daniel Smith, field representative from the school, is in charge of the group. Other members of the group are Clifford and Au drey Olson with Dianne Den- ham as pianist. Mr. Smith will speak. The Prairie Bible Institute was started in 1922. The inter denominational Bible school and high school now has an attendance of approximately 1,000 students. The voters of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran church, last Sunday elected the lay representative for the congre gation at the annual conven tion to be held in Portland, June 9 through 13. Ed Guetz laff was elected delegate with Joe Jarvis, alternate. St. Peter is connected with the Northwest district of the Lutheran church Missouri Synod. At the district conven tion the congregations are represented by one lay dele gate and oie pastoral vote. Major itemn of mission and educational policy are set by the convention, as well as dis cussion and action on .social responsibility and study of Christian doctrine and life. Adventisfs Schedule Vacation Schools A vacation Bible school workshop was held last Sun day at the Medford Seventh day Adventist church, with George S. Belleau, state direc tor from Portland, in charge. Representatives from the Grants Pass, Ashland, Valley View and Medford Adventist churches were present to re ceive materials to use in their schools. The Medford church will hold its vacation Bible school June 9 through 20. Mrs. Paul Beddoe is the director. Assist ing her in the two depart ments which will care for children from four to ten years of age are Mrs. Howard Dunlap, kindergarten leader, and Mrs. Merlin Dewey, pri mary leader. At Valley View the vaca tion Bible school will be June 16 through 27. Mrs. Elmer Fjarli is the director. Three departments will be conduct ed for children from. four to twelve years of age. Mrs. Clair Nogle is the kinder garten leader, Mrs. Fjarli is in charge of the primary de partment, and Mrs. Arnold Pflugrad is the leader of the junior age group. Camp Night Planned By First Methodists Camp night will be fea tured as the evening program as a family program at the First Methodist church, at 5:30 to 7:39 p.m. The Junior High MYF will serve the Camp food, the Rev. G. A. Trobough will be in charge of camp fun and camp inspi ration. All church campers and their families are invited to attend. Camp stamps, camp schedules, and camp program will be explained. Slides of the Oregon Methodist camp ing program will be shown. SKATING PARTY Talent The Junior Metho dist Youth fellowship group held a roller skating party at the Ashland rink Tuesday evening. The group from the Talent Methodist church were accompanied by their coun selors, Miss Katherine Long and Miss Phyllis Floyd. Lse Mansveld, for the past two years minister of music and administrative as sistant to the pastor at the First Church of the Naza rene, has accepted the pastor ate of the Church of the Naza rene in Astoria, it was an nounced last Wednesday. He will be installed in his new pastorate following the dis trict assembly to be held in Medford the week of May 19. Prior to his position in Med ford, ha served for five years as minister of music in the Pasadena, Calif., First Church of the Nazarene. Mr. and Mrs. Mansveld with their four daughters reside at 643 Pennsylvania ave. Sermon Topics Told By First Christian The - title of the sermon Sunday at First Christian church will be "Things In Which We Rejoice." The choir directed by Warren Fair banks will sing "Bread of Life." Mrs. Ralph Matlack will sing "I Will Lift up Mine Eyes Unto the Hills." For the evening service the sermon title will be "Pre cious Promises." Warren Fairbanks will lead the sing ing for the evening service. Many of the young people will leave Saturday to attend a pre-conference rally on the Myrtlewood camp grounds three miles below Bridge, Ore. They will return the same evening. Thursday evening will be an all church Mother-Daughter banquet. Tickets are avail able now from circle leaders, Marilyn Conner and the-office. The mother of the year from the church will also be honored. The Christian Men's Fellowship and the younger men of the church will be cooking and serving the meal. Friday a group of Chi Rho and Christian Youth Fellow ship adult leaders will be at tending a Youth Workers in stitute in Roseburg. Guest Night Planned By Christian Worker Guest night will be held this evening by the Young Christian Workers of Sacred Heart Catholic parish. The group, composed of young men and women, is open to all interested persons. Approximately 35 attend. At the meeting last week the Rev. Andrei Urusov, SJ, from the Catholic Russian Center of Our Lady , of Fati ma in San Francisco, Calif., spoke. He told of the work at his Russian Byzantine Rite chapel and briefly reviewed the history of Russia from the time of the first missionaries to the present time. He spoke on "For A Free Russia in a Free World." Officers Elected By Hazarenes Members of the First Church of the Nazarene con cluded annual church business Wednesday evening by elect ing seven men of the church to the board of trustees, with an additional nine member board of stewards to com promise the official chyrch board. ' At the meeting the pastor, the Rev. Raymond W. Hum, reported that church mem bership is at an all-time high, and church giving totaled $46,502, only $1,300 Under last year. Gains were made in addition to the fact that the congregation took the respon sibility for pioneering a sec ond church in Medford. The new church has been in oper ation for one full year and is the Mt. Pitt Avenue Church of 'the Nazarene. The congregation voted a request to the church board to inaugurate plans for pay ing off the church debt with in the next three years. A goal of 50 new members on profession of faith during the 50th anniversary of the de nomination was also set. Family Honored At Sunday Service The Church of the. Breth ren will begin observance of Christian Family Week May 4 through 11 with a Family night meeting tonight. A film will be shown entitled, "Over the Wall," and during the evening one family will be honored. The J. M. A. Leeuwenburgh family of Eagle Point, a Dutch family sponsored by the congregation will be given a kitchen shower, to mark the occasign of the Lee uwenburgh's moving into their own home. Sunday morning the pas tor, the Rev. Escil Hiser will give emphasis to "Christian Family Week" in his sermon entitled, "Your Home and The Kingdom," one of a series of sermons from the Gospel ac cording to St. Matthew. Student Qualifies For OSC Phi Sigma Corvallis Stanley M. Pu( cell of Medford has been se lected for1 membership in the biological sciences honorary at Oregon State college. To qualify for membership in Phi Sigma, students must demonstrate high scholarship and promise of future achieve ment in one of the biological science fields of study. Mr. Smith is the speaker for the party, and the others provide a variety of sacred music. . Mr. Smith completed his Bible training at Cliff college, England, served two years on the staff of the college as an evangelist, and then served as a missionary to China for 15 years under the China In land Mission. After his evacu ation in 1950 from China, he worked in Australia, Ceylon, and India with some of the foremost national preachers. Clifford and Audrey Olson are. brother and sister from Minneapolis, Minn. Clifford is a. senior at the interdenomi nataional Bible school, and Audrey is a 1958 graduate. They sing duets and each is a soloist. Miss Dianne Den ham, also a 1958 graduate of Prairie, is from Manitoba.. . Pipct Minister Presbyterian Youth Attend Presbytery v This week end the annual Southwest Oregon Youth Presbytery meetings of the Presbyterian church are being held at Roseburg. A delega tion of sixteen high school young people from the Fifst Presbyterian Church is at tending the conference which begins tonight and concludes Sunday afternoon. Dick Cor um of the Medford church has acted as moderator of the Youth Presbytery for the past year and Gordon Fleming and Jim Fontaine have also held Presbytery offices. The theme of the meetings is "This Is Your Life" and several dis cussion sections and inspira tional messages Will concen trate upon it.
