o Comets Csp 3-Way Cinder Eaele Point Crater high collected six individual first places and utilized its depth for other points to win a three-way track meet here yesterday. The Comets scored 72'2 points, Phoenix 45 and Ele Point 32V2. Wayne Christian, the only! triple victor, got all of Eagle Point's first places. He won the shotput, the javelin and the discus. Double winner was Ker man Bennett, Crater, -who captured both dashes. Crater's relay crew won and the other Comet victors were Nathan Parrish in the mile, Lee Gossett in the low hurdles and John Burns and Michaels (tied) in the high jump. , - - Phoenix took five first spots. Corey has been appointed head foot ball coach at Ashland High school. He will begin duties next fall, succeeding Al Simpson, who resigned to take a post at Cottage Grove. Corey. 32, has been coach ing at Grays Harbor Junior college, Aberdeen, Wash. He attended Grays Harbor and Central Washington college and holds a master's degree from University of Oregon. He has coached in the public schools at Aberdeen and at Baker, Ore. While at Univer sity of Oregon he was assist ant coach of "freshman foot ball. . .. The new Ashland mentor will teach social studies and will assist in basketball and in spring sports. His score exceeds that of state champion Jimmy Min nick, posted at the state title match on March 29, and the civilian national champion Gertrude Backstrom's score of the same date. This makes him a leading candidate for the national team for the in ternational matches in Mos cow, Russia next August. Closest to him was Roy Hew itt, 18 points behind with 270. Tribune Butte Falls Tips Talent In B Loop Butte Falls Butte Falls took over temporary lone lead in the Jackson County B league baseball campaign yes terday by drubbing Talent here 15 to 6. Prospect played at Jackson ville this afternoon with the winner to join Butte Falls at the head of the circuit. The four members of the loop had all been tied in the standings. A five-run first canto and a four-run fourth helped the Loggers to their Thursday verdict. Butte Falls socked 13 hits and all but one regular sock ed a safety. Fourteen Loggers got into the game. Dale Hawkins and Larry Cavin hit two for three and Jim Irwin, David Baker, and Raymond Abbott two for three. Jerry Ferguson hit a line single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and the swat got by the outfielder to ac count for the' four runs. Bill Snyder tripled for Tal ent and John Butler got two hits. - Baker, tossing 3 13 frames for BF gave up three hits, fanned two and walked four batters. Last Place Only 2 Tussles Place in PC League By GENE BRYANT United Press Sports Writer Two well-pitched games h i g h-lighted Pacific Coast league play Thursday night but an afternoon of fence busting at Salt Lake City went against the trend as the Bees erupted for 19 hits and the same number of runs to bury Vancouver, 19-5. Bud Watkins had a no-hitter going for seven and two thirds innings at Sacramento where the Solons won their first home game of the season, defeating Portland 2-0. At San Diego, Dom Zanni of Phoenix allowed the Padres only five hits as the Giants evened the series with another 2-0 victory. Seattle edged Spo kane, 5-4, to take a 2-1 series lead over the Indians. Portland Leads League Thursday night's action left Portland in first place, a half game in front of Vancouver, but the league tightened up enough to leave last-place Sacramento only two games off the pace.. Salt Lake made up for the general lack of hitting as the Bees collected their second victory over the Mounties in two days. Vancouver had beaten Salt Lake five straight times before Wednesday's de feat and the disaster yester day. Willie Melendez and Jim McDaniel, who now has hit six for six in the past two games, homered for the win ners. McDaniel had two homers in Wednesday's win. Don Kildoo picked up the victory after replacing start er Joe Trimble, who departed in the third because of a knee injury. The Bees had amassed a 12-man lead when Kildoo made his appearance. Watkins Has Three. Hit Came Bob. Bprkowski singled to left with two out in the seventh to spoil Watkins' no hitter for Sacramento. Port land could manage only two more safeties off Watkins as the Solon pitcher picked up the first shutout of the year for the winners. Starter John Buzhardt of Portland also pitched well be fore being taken out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth. He was charged with the loss. It marked the first time in the history of the monthly ratings that two fighters were rated on a par. Machen was No. 1 and Folley was ranked second before their fight. In the light heavyweight division, Jesse Bowdry of St. Louis cracked the top 10 for the first time on the strength of his unanimous decision over Clarence Hinnant at Chicago Wednesday night. Yakima won its first North west league game of the young season Thursday night and Lewiston dropped its first as the Bears topped the Broncos 6-1. The defeat threw Lewiston into a two-way tie for top spot with Tri-City which edged Eugene 3-2. Ted Tappe belted a two run homer in the first for Yakima and the Bears were never headed as veteran Bob Roberts hurled 3-hit ball and fanned seven while walking but one. Bill Eastburn smashed a two-run homer in the third inning to give Eugene an early lead but Tri-City came back with three unearned runs in the seventh and eighth frames to win.
