In the region beyond 1,000 miles, it was revealed, Ex plorers I and II ran into yet unidentified rays hundreds of times more intense than scien tists had expectfed. On the other hand, the chances of damage to space ships from meteors turn out to be "extremely small" and problems of temperature con trol are easily licked. This and other information from America's entry in the satellite derby were reported public for the first time in an unusual joint meeting of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Physical society. Russia has yet to make a similar report of in formation gathered by the now deceased Sputniks I and II. Radiation Report The U.S. satellite informa tion was disclosed by scien En Escapism Hi Alcoholic &at San Iftancisco (IP) Evange list Billy Graham Bnows the reason why San Ereftcisco leads the nation in alcoholics' end suicides. He told en audience of 11, 000 Wednesday night the rea son is "escapism" a flight from the realities of life to an "illusive, imaginary world." A world, ha hardly needed to add, without God. Preaching in the vest Cow Palace to his smallest audi ence in the four days of his s2x-wee& crusade, Graham todk his text from Hebrews, 2nd Chapter, 3rd Verse: "How shall we escape, if we neglect o great a salvation.0 Everyone a Binneg He noted the Bible claims everyone is gsilty of sin. Be cause of that, he said, every one is "separated from God." And that is why everyone is hunting for coma f8rm of es cape. "The reason wa have teen age gangs," he said, "is escap ism. One of the reason tesn-agers- go steady is escapism. They ace loking for a world of security they haven't found otherwise." This wanting to escage, Re said, is why San Francisco has oee of the highest s-uicide rates in the nation and leads the na tion in the rate of alcoholic. "The (grace of Gofl can give greater pleasure than, escap ism," he said. 80S E3a decision Graham then aeke8 thfe au dience to "give your heart to Jesus Christ, tonight." In response to his plea, 306 persons came forward to re pent. That brought the. total number of conversions for four nights to 1374. Before Wednesday night's meeting, Graham had a pri vate session with Willie Kirk land, rookie outfielder dor the San Francisco Giants. Kirk land said they talked about the weather. Earlier Wednesday Graham held a closed meeting with 500 seminajy students at Berkeley at which he defended his miss-ion. "Evangelism is the whole work of the church," he said. "It is a thrust outward toward tmcommifted areas." if toydrive, better ear Modford Automobile Dealers have some dandies - - See them tomorrow! o Keep Medfcrd's Bconomy Rolling . . . YOU AUTO BUY M! Van Allen, University of Iowa physicist, who designed cos mic ray instruments for the A f m y Explorers launched Jan. 31 and March 26. From the far ' reaches of their orbits, beyond 1,000 miles out, "counts of particle pulses per second soared to rates hundreds of times great er than had been expected." The radiation was "so in tense as to overwhelm cosmic ray counters" beyond the sat ellites. E x pi o r e r I's ray counts ran 30 to 40 per sec ond 200 to 300 miles above southern California observing stations. But at the far end of their orbits above South America both satellites re ported counts above 35,000 a second. Not Safe for Man The instruments do not tell just what kind of radiation they ran into. But if the high rates were produced by x rays from the sun, they repre sented a radiation dosage of as Canst leys' Tree-Heuse Problem Solved Atherton, Calif. (IP) A planning official suggested to day a way in which two little ( boys? can keep their tree-house no matter what the city coun cil says. Frang Stillman, planning director for San Mateo coun ty, - said thQ boys could put wheels on it. "So far as I know," he said, "there's no law against put ting a trailar in a tree." (This might Be just the so lution for Kenneth Temple ton, 9, and his 8-year-old brother, John, who allegedly violated zoning restrictions by building a tree-house in the front $$ard. ' The council reminded the boys of a local law that says they should get a building per mit. It ordered the city attor ney to proceed with an in junction suit. Mayor Henry Kuechler ad mitted "K I were a kid, I'd be pretty sore it anyone told me I had to get a permit to build a tree-house," he said. "But we have to uphold these Eegulations." Arkansas Workers Baffle Weak levee Garland City, Ark. (IP) Sighting to save the homes of 1,600 persons, mud -smeared, weary flood workers heaved sandbag, after sandbag early today on a miles-long levee south of here on McKinney Bayou. Water, reported more than 26 feet deep, licked at the top of the dike. "Iteems to be under con trol," said Mike Auck, civil defense director for Miller county, as.nearly 200 Nation al Guardsmen, Air Force pec eonnel and "civilian volun teerj carried sandbags by mo torboat to weak points in the dike. Five hours of such exposure would be equivalent to the maximum permitted atomic workers for an entire week. "This," the report said, "could mean that it would not be safe for a human being to remain more than 1,000 miles out in space for more than five hours unless he could be adequately shielded with lead or .other layers of enough mass and density to block such dangerous quanti ties of the penetrating invisi Sunday Auto Sales Vetoed in Indiana Indianapolis, Ind. (IP) The Indiana Supreme Court upheld in a 4-1 vote the le gality of a new state law which prohibits the sale of automobiles on Sunday. The majority opinion Wed nesday quoted Scripture in ruling the 1957 legislation does not violate the state con stitution, adding that the con cept of Sunday rest "has been adopted by the governments of most civilized societies." In a dissenting opinion, Jus tice Arch Bobbitt said the law was a "clear" violation of the constitution and that "Chris tianity cannot be legislated." Van Allen said, however, the dangerous zone may b limited to a region of space only a few hundred or a few thousand miles deep. Later satellites may tell. Scientists of the California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion laboratory report ed that simple temperature controls designed for the Ex plorer I proved the possibility of making space safe for man as far as heat and cold are concerned. Attempted Revolt in Colombia Crushed Bogota, Columbia (IP) The military junta government, which has vowed to use "all the means at its disposal" to maintain order, announced late Wednesday that it has crushed an attempted revolt. The junta said armed civil ians took over a radio station in the provincial town of San gil before dawn Wednesday and seized the mayor as a hos tage. At the same time, other rebels set off several bombs in Bogota.
