Warning Issued On Mussel Use Portland TO The State Board of Health Wednesday issued a new warning against consumption of marine mus sels or uncleaned clams taken from Oregon coastal waters. Dr. Harold M. Erickson, ttate health .officer, said the ban on sale and distribution of the seafood between May 1 and Oct. 31 each year was continued throughout the past winter because of an off-season invasion into northwest coastal waters of a tiny poison producing plankton called G. cataneila. Periodic laboratory tests were made throughout the winter months to guarantee the safety of any Oregon sea food entering the open mar ket. "It is unsafe to eat any por tion of the mussels this time of year because they may con tain a strong alkaloid poison similiar to strychnine," Dr. Erickson said. He pointed out that digestive organs of clams also may contain the poison, although the white meat is "safe and delicious during this season." Dr. Erickson stres sed: "Reputable commercial pack ers are aware of the danger and do not permit any of the harmful seafood to enter the open market."
