t 11 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford', Oregon. Wednesday, April 30, 1958 Bank Manager Says Campaign Will Keep The Economy Strong "Action bv the Medford Automobile Dealers associa tion in staging the 10-day "Keep Medford's Economy Rolling" campaign is certain ly a commendable program that will help keep our city's economy s t r o n g," Elwood Hedberg, vice president and manager of the Medford , branch of First National Bank of Portland, said. These merchandising ef forts are a good sign of the strength of our business com munity, Hedberg said. "For the great part, the course of our nation's economy depends on what individual citizens do. For that reason the deal ers campaign to promote a lively trade in the goods our people need can help to re store the steady growth of our economy," Hedberg con tinued. Business seems to be in bet ter condition than is business Mayor Supports Program to Help Medford's "Keep Medford's Economy Rolling .... You Auto Buy Now" campaign, scheduled for May 1 through 10 received endorsement from Medford Mayor John Snid er. "The automobile dealers of this area are to be commend ed," he said, "for developing what seems to me to be the ideal answer to recession psy chology: more sales. I feel certain that the whole bus iness picture here will be benefited by this all-out ef fort. My best wishes go to the planning committee of the dealers group and to all of the business community for a most successful campaign." Planned Display Many of the new car deal ers have planned unusual dis plays, in addition to the full line floor models that virtu ally all of them will be show ing at values. Demonstratiton rides will be featured highlights of the sales presentations by most dealers. A parade, contests, incen tive awards to the public, new car buyers and to salesmen will be a part of the 10-day promotional period. Cochairmen of the planning group, Hugh Coleman and Darrell Miller, said, "we are confident that this investment of money and the time of over a hundred community leaders, will be well spent. It can create a lasting benefit for the community." - i V ' Whizzing down the turnpike in your new 1958 Flashmobile can give you a mighty satisfying feeling. Satisfying, too, is the wonderful taste of fresh, cold milk with every meal! Milk is good and good for you! After all, it's nature's most perfect food! Enjoy some with every meal and with those in-between snacks, too! Drink at Least Glasses of MILK a Day! sentiment, Hedberg said There is littla mathematical proof that a severe recession lies ahead, but there is evi dence that we can talk our selves into one, he believes. The present local promotion should be of great help to our business atmosphere, he added. , Bank deposits are up 24 million in Oregon for the first three months, compared to the same period in 1957. It is a gain of cash in savings accounts, while there has been a decline in total checking account deposit balances. . . . This is another sign that some have adopted a wait and - see attitude, the local banker said. He feels that spending today for reason able needs is a healthy stimu lant to our economy. From such spending comes business activities that mean work, wages and continued payrolls. If under normal circum stances you would buy a new car now, go on and do it, Hed berg advised, Don't be in fluenced by talk of recession, because recessions are con tinued by those who stop do ing what they normally do without particular reason, thus causing unemployment and more recession, he con cluded. The local promotion pro gram wilf continue through May 10, with dealers agree ing to remain open until 9 p. m. each evening during the campaign. They will not open on Sunday; it was stated. Mobile Homes Show Increase in Sales Chicago (IP) Sales of mo bile homes showed an in creasse for the third straight year, according to the Mo bile Homes Manufacturers as sociation. Robert McMackin, associa tion president, said that the number of mobile homes shipped to dealers during 1957 totaled approximately 140,300 units. He said the increase :vas slightly more than 600 units over the number pro duced" in 1956. McMakin noted that over size units measuring 10 feet in width continued to grow in popularity as the industry turned out an estimated 50, 500 of the larger rolling homes in 1957. He said the figure compared with a 1956 total of just over 29,500. Travel trailers popular with outdoor" enthusiasts, account ed for 11 per cent of ship ments, McMakin said. - MILKfrroIucers Civil Service Jobs Available During Summer for Pupils Washington (IP) Attention high school and college stu dents scouting summer jobs: UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU! At the end of each school quarter they swap places. It usually takes five years to finish college under this plan 36 months in school and 24 months on the job. Stu dents are paid $347 to $306 a month during their work periods. Further information can be obtained from the Civil Serv ice commission here or from its 11 regional offices through out the country. It simply means that seed is sown in a furrow cut in the soil with a hoe or stick. "Broadcast has nothing to do with radio or tele vision. It means to scatter seed over a wide area of ground. A "hill" is not a hill at all. To gardeners it means that a few seeds are planted in a little circle. -- ' Most ' vegetables are seeded in drills (or furrows, if you pre fer) although a few, such as leaf lettuce (see diagram) are broadcast and some, such as cu :umbers and squash, are planted in hills. Annual flowers for. the most part are seeded outdoors by the broadcast method. Seeds large enough to pick up in the fin gers, such as marigolds and zin nias, may be placed three to a hill, the hills being spaced about a foot apart as shown in the diagram. i Before sowing any seed out doors the soil should be turned over, fertilized and raked smooth. As a rule, the smaller the seed, the shallower it is planted. -. Tiny petunias' and snapdra gon seeds can be pressed gently into the soil after the seed is broadcast from the packet. Nasturtiums, sunflowers, beans and com can either be pressed into the soil about a half-inch or if they are sown in drills, the furrowed soil should be pushed back over them to about that depth. SEED SOWlNC HCTMOOS FOR VEGETABLES SOWlNC FLOWER SEEDS IN 'HILLS IN BORDERS. CROPS But to remove any doubt from your mind as to the depth of planting seeds, instructions are always given on the back of each seed packet. In the vegetable garden, & narrow drill for carrots and beets can be made in the soil with a pointed stick. Medium sized drills for radishes and onions can be made by drawing the hoe on edge along & taut cord between stakes that mark the row. Wide drills for peas and beans are made by using the full width of the hoe. The distance between rows varies with the crop to be planted. Carrots, beets, beans and lettuce are spaced from 18 to 24 inches apart. Corn and tomato rows go 36 inches apart. To conserve space or to make the most of it, radish and let tuce that go in the ground a month or more before corn and tomatoes, are planted between the proposed cor4 and tomato rows. This is one form of suc cession planting. After the seed is sown and covered, with soil, it should be watered with a fine sprinkler. Keep the ground moist at all times until germination. It's not necessary to sprinkle the entire garden . . . just the seeded drills or patches. Why encourage weed seeds to germinate be tween the rows? So, in the garden vernacular, let's all get in and drill and broadcast and plant in bills. First pure nickel is believed to have been prepared in about 1804. COME TRUE!
